I feel I may have committed a major violation in bar room etiquette.
I was drinking at my regular joint one night, having already consumed some Sapphire tonics, a couple of Jaegermeisters, several beers and several chilled Patron shots. So I was on my way.
Anyhoo, a friend (actually more like an acquaintance) who works at the bar surprised me with a wonderful gift out of the blue, a beautiful bottle of Patron silver. So there I am sitting at the bar now with my own bottle of Patron, and in my half-drunken state, I decided to crack open the bottle right there at the bar.
I probably sucked down a third of it sitting right there at the bar. I felt guilty, since this is my regular joint, and Iwasn't buying drinks anymore, instead I was simply pouring my own. In fact, I probably wouldn't have gotten away with it if I wasn't a regular.
Just wanted to get that off my chest and clear my conscience.
Thanks and good night.
Do I need a lesson in proper bar drinking etiquette?

Tipping assuages your guilt and mollifies their anger.
Tip well and often and you can get away with a lot in most bars.
As a matter of fact, as someone who's rarely trying to get away with anything, that if you tip well and often you'll often be encouraged to do things in the bar you never would have considered on your own.

It sounds like you had already bought a fair share by that time and probably tipped well as well. I'm sure if the bartender didn't want you to drink it there, that person wouldn't have given it to you in the condition you were in.

Hard weather and hard booze
But maybe that's just the price you pay

Yes, I have gotten away with more than any man has a right to in this particular bar.
My place even takes my checks. That's how I know I'm a regular.

If he didn't want you to drink it there, he would've waited until you were paying your tip and leaving to give it to you, and said something like "a little something for you to take home." If he didn't do those things and didn't want you to drink it there, it was his fault for not being expressly clear.

If you're in this spot again, offer the bartender a shot or two and all is well.
