The Late Shift

Post by timds »

Don't know if this has been brought up before, but does anyone else on here work nights? I always feel like an outcast rolling into the local BP and buying a 12 of Bud, especially when they don't have the coolers open yet. Just wondering if anyone has run into this. I always feel like I have to explain "this is like 6pm for me...ha ha ha". I always feel like a dick.

I have done nights in the past, and sometimes the "afternoon" shift at work tends to become night working due to overtime.
Cant say that i have bought Beer at night though (cant buy it in Gass stations in Norway)

I work until 1am now, not too late a finish but it does eat into my valuable pub time. I get an hour break and spend it in the local and come back reeking of smoke. I go for the 'very professional' look :D

I worked overnights for years. Before that I hung out with people who did. I always figured the liquor stores open up eight in the morning for a reason. Same with the bars hell me and a buddy of mine used to head down to the Oleander every Saturday at 7am. They'd let us in the back door and serve us an hour before they opened even though they ccouldn't sell us drinks. Then somewhere around mid-afternoon it was home to bed. Unless the nextday was a day off then it could be nice chance to do and open to close shift on the barstool, at least take a run at it.

I've been working nights for about a year now, luckily I have a liquor store down the road from me that opens at 6am, which is when you can legally sell here (KY). I've become a familiar face to the woman working the counter on those hazy mornings. There's also a bar on the way home that opens at 6am. Its a good feeling being the only one drinking at the bar with the jukebox going at 6am.

I've taken a fondness towards getting nice and hammered when I get off, for me, this is my evening. Get off, drunk myself up real good, then sleep around noon. Plus, drunk dialing people at 10am is incredibly fun.

I don't know why you "feel like a dicK". Years ago I worked overnight at a machine shop and I used to love buying beer in the morning when I got off work. I thoroughly enjoyed standing in line at the local 7-11 at 7:15 am. The place would be packed with people in shirts and ties buying coffee and donuts. I'd be standing in line all covered in grease holding a 12 pack and a few chili cheese dogs. The looks I got and the conversations I held were priceless. Those were the good ol' days.

I used to work a grave yard shift and a work buddy and I would open the bar when we got off. Those were good times. Now I work the swing shift and buy my booze before I go to work. I don't like working days. To meny noses...

You're right, I shouldn't feel like a dick. The others wish they were buying beer and going home to sleep. They'll be doing the same thing 12 hours later! F 'em.

Being on the devensive is the wrong way to go when buying morning beer. You need to go rockstar on people. One of my fonder memories is of taking this girl I was seeing at the time into a local gas station at 6 in the morning, and buying every bottle of pink champagne they had (both of 'em!). We went in like we owned the place, and it was soooo obvious the donut and coffee crowd had no idea how to handle the situation. I loved every minute of it.
But, now I work second shift, and I consider it an early morning if I'm out of bed before noon.
