Best beer bang for buck.

Post by Jaime »

Sometimes the cheapest is not the best. The best alcohol to price ratio for me is New Belgium, "Trippel" (7.9% per bottle). Of course, HG800 beats it, but I am a light weight.

WIth the economy in tatters, what is the best deal in the good beer per dollar category?

I may be a dirty uncouth degenerate, but I'll love $1.40 24oz. Steel Reserves (8.2%) til death.

There's also Karlsquell (German, I believe?). It's only 4.8%abv, but you can get it at the Aldi Markets (in Belgium) for 4.50 euros (@ $5.90 usd) in 18packs.

Tastes like canal water, but after @ 3 cans you don't notice so much.

Here's what I've been doing:

Find your local shady liquor store. I won't necessarily be the one in the bad part of town. It will be the one that always has the "too good to be true" sales. You know the one.

Find the biggest sale on beer. Check the expiration date. If that date is less than three months in the past, go for it.
Don't worry about the recently expired beer killing you. It shouldn't, because it hasn't really spoiled yet. It's just that the time it has spent sitting on the shelf has degraded the taste a bit.

Beer distributors are supposed to buy back and destroy every drop of expired beer out there. They lose a lot of money on that, so most distributors will cultivate a shady store, where they can blow out all that old crap. They sell at a hefty discount, but at least they get some money back.

It's cheap, it's still beer, and most times it will still taste better than bumbeers. For example, MGD Light that's two months past its prime tastes a lot like High Life.

Erm, I guess Evil Eye if you can get past the taste. 11% and less than $2 for a 24oz..... while that may not sound particularly strong, it's the manner of the alcohol that is of note. The hangovers are epic and the drunk is considerably dirty.

Also, fuck steel reserve. The 8.1% Hurricane is superior.

Really, if you think anything produced by New Belgium is the best dollar/drunk ratio, you need to explore bottom shelf malt liquor.

I can get 30 packs of Keystone Light for about $16 in most of the gas stations around here. Tastes like water, but it works.

Natural Ice.

Omegang is good blegian-style beer for US micro prices.

I've drank expired beer a few times, never noticed any problem with the taste. It was free though.
The last thing that anyone should ever do is feel ashamed of blacking out. You were trying to get drunk last night and, goddamnit, mission accomplished.

Got me through college. Cheap and reasonably strong, I believe 5.9% ABV.

Still, if you're trying to drink cheap, liquor will beat beer every single time.

Natty Ice is what I turn to when I've been losing at the track.

If you guys can find it, North Coast Brewery out of CA puts out a Imperial Stout by the name of Old Rasputin that's probably one of the best bang for the buck craft beers out there. They come in a four-pack that usually runs anywhere from 7-9 dollars. They're 9% ABV so they get the job done. Cheers.
