the 10,000th iteration of "why i drink"

Post by MeanOldLady »

i should probably get confetti or something...

i had a good weekend. very easily, without question, the best weekend i've had in about six months. this is not just because midwest winters last 6 months, and i am now entering the non-winter half of the year; it's more that everything went just splendidly.

friday night, i couldn't think of a damn thing in the world i'd rather do than what i did (which was nothing spectacular, and is kind of the point). saturday, i swear the sun came out specifically for me. nothing was planned that day, but everything went the way i would have chosen, had i planned. this morning i got a text from a pal that said not much else than "let's go outside." let's. it's a beautiful day, and i couldn't fathom a better idea. nothing, my gods nothing, will make you appreciate a beautiful day more than living in the midwest. california, i know you're sunny and i love you as much as that old friend of mine who i care about yet don't see anymore, but i've lived with you for 24 years and have never loved a spring day that i way i do today, right now.

today we just kind of walked. we weren't walking to anywhere, we were just out, because we could be... without sleeves! eventually we settled upon breakfast on a patio somewhere. we slouched, we drank, we ate, i quickly dismissed the notion that it was too early for booze. we sat in the sun, talked and drank, laughed as if everything in the world were funny (and a lot of it is, if you think about it) then went home.

as simple as that sounds, it made me happier than i can say. but then that cloud, that dark cloud that always hovers over me on sunday afternoons spoke, "you have to go to work tomorrow," and i protested. i screamed, i fought against time, which (as it turns out!) is a futile battle. am i supposed to be trapped in the high-rise dungeon for eight hours? eight?! in spring? but i had such a lovely weekend drinking in the simple things. how can it be that this is how i have to spend my time? and for what? money, so that i can live and eat? a wonderful time on a beautiful day is worth more than money, i would like to imagine, except without it, the day ain't so beautiful when you're sleeping outside. so i do this... eight hours because no one pays me to beat everyone at scrabble yet, distressed by the conundrum, but weakly acknowledging this conundrum is tahe reality until i can find a better one.

what will i do on monday? a long, beautiful day... wasted... at work. well, afterward, i think i'll have a drink.

Great post. I too have exerpienced such short, simple and above all, glorious weekends. Too bad, for me they are few and far between, but when they happen, damn is it good.

The only thing that sucks about drinking is the [apparently teetotal] demons inside. "You have to work tomorrow", "It's really late", "It's really early", "humans need food to survive"...etcetera . Translate all those questions into "Is this worth a hangover?"...It always is. I too have been enjoying the warming weather, friands, and drinking. Always do the right thing.

I'm enjoying one of those times right now.

The sun is brilliant in the late afternoon sky. I've spent my last amoutn of money until payday this Friday on a cold 4-pack to see me through the rest of the day.

It's times like this when I really wish I earned enough write-from-home money to be able to do this every-single-day.

Cheers.

yes. i never listen to the "tomorrow is monday" naggers.

i didn't mean to make a "i drink because i hate my job" post, even though i do (among many other reasons). i'm not even sure what i was trying to say anymore. i was drunk.

I plan on drinking some gin and tonics this weekend. It should be perfect for it. Tuesday I am going to be looking at a condo/townhouse we might be moving to. $25/month cheaper than the apartment we live in now, and it will include garbage and landscaping. Plus- washer and dryer. We don't have any utilities included, or a washer or dryer. Here's the link. What do you guys think?

It also has one bedroom more than we currently have.

Sorry for the threadjacking.

you're not sorry for the threadjacking. Nothing I can say will affirm or desuade your decision, so I will make no definite statements about it.

Note: She didn't move into that condo. She did much better.I'll let her tellyou about the "ghetto".It'sreally good. really.

I also suffer from that Sunday issue. I stay up way too late every night because I need a number of awake hours not involved in working to make me feel like I have a real life. My wife says I get bitchy on Sunday afternoon because ofthe upcoming Monday. It's true.

Can't do anything about it. But I make sure I have enough b00ze supplies to keep mefrom thinking too much about it.

I should have hit up that area this past April. There was a great bar in the area that served High Life in juice glasses for a $1. So much character there!

Great post too MOL. Every weekend I hit the woods with the little one to escape responsibility; aside from him of course; and we bask in nature. He sips on juice and I sip on bourbon. It makes up happy.

A well written insight to a great weekend. Well done! I would also add that living in the Northeast makes you appreciate a nice day, as well. The weather in Santa Cruz was the greatest I've ever lived in, but a gorgeous spring day or a gorgeous fall day before the gigantic bummer that is a Massachusetts winter makes those fleeting times of beauty so much more powerful than anything I experienced in CA.

The work time is part of what makes those days so incredible, never let the fantastic become the mundane, to take pleasure in the simplest things is worth any ammount of work. Remember, the glass isn;t half empty, it just needs a top up.
