You've got $20...

Post by Jiggers McCoy »

Going off one of the standard questions for the Drunk of the Issue, what would be your preferred poison be if you had a double-sawbuck burning a hole in your pocket?

Me, I'd probably have to dig in the couch to make up the tax, but here in Tampa, a Foster's oilcan is $2, and so is a shooter bottle of Beam. So 5 of each would eat up the $20 and certainly the rest of the day.

How about you?

A fifth of Beam and a 12 pack of Steel Reserve would come out to right around $20 with tax.

Here in Belgium, if I had €20 in my pocket and wanted to balance reasonable-quality/bang-for-the-buck, I'd hit the local Delhaize supermarket and get a 700ml of Beam White (@€16 and change/40%abv) and a 4x33cl-pak of "Angel", the chain's Duvel knock-off (@€3.00/8.5%abv).

You'd have to nurse those 4 beers but that's easy enough to do, given their abv.

Plastic jug Gin and a case of Penn Style Ice. Drink half of the can, top up with Gin, and enjoy. Cheers.

Beam is $11 before tax and Steeley 12pks are $7something before tax. It'd be pushing it, but not by more than about a buck or so. For the sake of science I'll go buy this combo to find out exactly.

I've discovered through these forums that liquor is apparently the one thing that's cheaper here than it is most other places. I think it's because we don't have any of those retarded laws about who can sell what when or whatever so booze is sold everywhere which keeps it cheap. When I worked at a liquor store we used to sell our kegs for literally a $5 margin between wholesale and retail price. Ice and cups were marked way the hell up, however.

Right you are. Every state is different. The one I'm in is pretty good for bar drinking, but liquor and beer are only sold in liquor stores between certain hours of the day. Less competition can yield higher prices I guess. A fifth of beam is at least $15 here. Though the S. reserve is about the same prive.

@Lidl, they have great Chardonnay for 2.5 € a bottle. So I'd buy me eight bottles of Chardonnay. That'll make a nice weekend.

That's a good idea. My manager keeps telling me to check the booze prices in the local Lidol. For some reason, I never think to go in that store. The name just doesn't register with me as a food/beverage store. I've somehow gotten the idea that it's a department (dry goods) store.
