Rum wasn't just for sailors. Makes sense, given the harsh conditions.

During WWI, the breweries in Belgium were ordered to close, as the visible steam from the brewing process could attract artillery fire into the towns of their locale (though some continued operating clandestinely at night). However, one was legally allowed to remain open; the brewery at the Abbey of Sint Sixtus (Westvleteren), which supplied beer to thirsty Belgian and other allied soldiers.
