Actually pale ale. Bright ale is something else. I dunno what.

bright ale means that the beer has sat, and/or finings have been added, causing the yeast to drop to the bottom. Thee Beer is then racked or filtered to remove any sediment, leaving "bright" beer

I see. Little Creatures also make bright ale, but i havent tried it. There are so many pale ales these days, & generally overpriced. All these craft beers sprung up seemingly overnight & i reckon half of them are produced by the big breweries trying to cash in on punters dissatisfaction with mainstream aussie lager. I saw an ad for beers by the steamrail brewing company attractively priced at liquorland. A quick search found a site which told me that they are produced by coles, which owns liquorland, but you have to look up the companys ownership to discover this. So its just home brand beer masquerading as craft beer. No reason big breweries cant make good beer, but why do they try & pretend to be something theyre not? Because theyre opportunistically priced, most of the time, thats why. Little creatures pale ale is pretty nice, as it happens, but coopers green is too, & its a sight cheaper.

I haven't had it in a long while, but Cooper's used to be the best Australian beer you could get here, bar none.

I have been talked at by the head brewer for a large scottish brewery. They produce beers for smaller brands. What he said tends to happen is that a beer becomes locally popular but the small brewery can't match demand. The large brewery has capacity, and often more importantly the packaging capacity to meet demand. He would not comment on which brands these were. Also, there are large breweries who launch new brands and pointedly don't mention the parent brand. I used to get worked up about it, but if a beer is good, it's good, no matter who makes it.

Good beer is indeed good, but a good buy is also good. In Oz the market has been saturated with so-called premium brands that offer little more than an "amusing" name (eg. My wifes bitter) & an ambitious price. Now i havent tried my wifes & it may be fine, but shit like gage road & james boag are just completely mediocre aussie beer sold at inflated prices on the back of ad campaigns, regional parocialism & the ficklesness of impulse buyers overwhelmed by the variety of choice that doesnt really amount to much difference at all. Dont get me started on great northern - only sold in colourless bottles & only in QLD in order to convey a point of difference on to what is just more CUB swill.

sounds pretty similar to the uk market

one great thing we have here, thanks to the eu, is a break on duty for smaller breweries to help them compete on price. Means I can buy a barrel of beer from a local brewer cheaper than most pubs buy theirs. One thing I've found is that smaller brewers are less consistent than some big ones. Saying that, certain regularly discounted bulk volume lagers in the UK have shocking consistency. They are shit cheap though, so who am I to complain

Cool, not happening here sadly. Pubs, restaurants etc can go shopping at a huge marked called "metro". All is in super large sizes and very cheap. Us german mortals are not allowed in there
