This is really nice. Gentle, warm vanilla start, hints of toffee, maybe figs. Subtle, alluring, smokey finish. This would be the one to introduce new people to Islay Scotch.

Excellent framing on that image, Sir Patchez. In-fucking-deed.

How long it must have taken to find that tiny bottle of original proof. And you drank that little summinabeotch.

Yup. Gawdayam.

For years now, I've lamented the fact that I don't like Scotch. I also realize it's because I just don't understand it. I recently talked, via the Skyper, to Patchez and Badfellow about it. They both agreed that a tasting session, led by a knowledgeable, yet non-snobby expert is what I needed.

As luck would have it, two of my neighbors are really into Scotch and I was invited to one of their homes for a tour of Scotland by way of about ten bottles.

One of my neighbors made a good point: "When you smoke a cigarette, you do it for the quick physical effects of the nicotine. When you smoke a cigar, you take time to savor the flavor. A rum and Coke or a gin and tonic tastes pretty good, but there is no depth to the flavor. It's like a cigarette. Scotch is like a cigar. If you take your time, you'll discover the depth... Scotch isn't meant to be drank, it was designed to be savored."

Okay. So I took my time and sipped, paused, breathed, and relaxed. Holy shit. I get it.

Turns out, I'm a fan of stuff made in the Speyside region. Jesus, each region is really unique.

Looking forward to more exploration.

I had a favorite, but I'm going to have to ask my neighbor which one it was. It may have been Glenfiddich 18.

Any recommendations for a good peated scotch? Looking for something under the 100 price range.

Laphroaig 10
Ardbeg 10
Bruichladdich Port Charlotte 10
Springbank 10
Compass Box Peat Monster

If you're new to peat, I would go with the Springbank, although it may be harder to find than the others. It's one of my favorite whiskys.

The Ardbeg (cheapest of the lot) and Port Charlotte (top 20 whisky according to Whisky Advocate) are going to be the earthiest of those that I recommended.

Laphroaig 10 is an excellent staple, but turns a lot of people off due to some of its medicinal and saline qualities -- I happen to like those.

Keep an eye out for the Compass Box bottle if you find out you really like peat.

The only thing I would add to Nausea's list would be Bunnahabhain 12. Soft and gentle smokey caresses from this one.
