Oak spirals have been around for a while and actually do work for aging spirits, wine or beer. The idea is that the cut of the spiral maximizes the surface area of oak exposed to your product, and while the concept is quite ingenious, it is still no substitute for a well coopered barrel. The convenient part though is that they will fit through the neck of a glass carboy, jug or jar. They're also much cheaper than a brand new barrel. I could see oak spirals being useful for a quick 6-8 month taming of white dog or old tom gin.

Yeah, I'd say give these a try, assuming your able to sit on liquor for that long.

Funny you should mention taming something.... This has been in the jar of rye shine for about 1 year and 1 month. I'll hit it this weekend and report my findings.
