Trouble finding a Tomuntil 16.

Post by Judge »

A friend wants to learn to drink Scotch. Since this fellow normally mixes his TJD with Mountain Dew (this is Mississippi after all) I know this is going to be a project. I've found the Speyside region's Tomuntil 16 to be a great (and not too expensive) beginner's scotch.

Its smooth, can't hardly taste the peat and taught right can set a man on a lifelong pursuit of gentlemanly activities.

I've looked all over town (we have decent liquor stores) but no luck. I'm thinking just about any Speyside over 12 years old might work but am still a bit hesitant.

Any thoughts or recommendations? Blendeds are off my menu.

Auchentoshan is a lowland malt, pretty much all of which are dangerously drinkable. My usual starting point whisky recommendations are Glenfarclas 10yo,Highland Park 12yo,MacAllan Gold and the Auchentoshan American Oak. As he's more of a TJD drinker, the latter may be an easy transition point

The Highland Park may work. If I can't get the Tomuntil I doubt I'll find the Auchentoshan. Sometimes the South is just a little south. Next time I get up to Memphis or Nashville I may go hunting.

Would single malt Irish whiskeys be a better place to start?

Tully or Teeling may be easier to find. Bushmills should be ab easy find. Even in the Deep South.

If you do wait till hunting in civilization I would suggest some of the milder Jura scotches. Superstition was a brilliant soft, smokey bitch.
