Re: "The Slow Death of Prohibition."
I think that that map is misleading, now that I look at it again. Sadly, not really in regards to the Commonwealth of Kentucky, but for Indiana. They have a few odd laws up there, at least in the counties around Louisville. There's no cold beer in gas stations, but there is chilled "wine"; no individual beers either. But this might just be in stores close to the interstate. I couldn't figure that one out.
Also, don't states like Pennsylvania and Michigan have state stores? That would account for the yellow. I wonder how much the red counties out west are due to Reservations & federal land.
Utah should be all yellow. There are strange laws there.
In the Commonwealth, efvery time that there is a vote, the opposition is, if any, thinly veiled based on religious reasons.

Pennsylvania, yes, Michigan, no. And the ridiculousness of the state as a whole doesn't even factor in here. Only the county-by-county laws and regulations. EG Indiana and MD both sell 190 proof everclear in damn near any place you want, whereas in PA, we can't even get a nice wine for dinner without dealing with the state's bullshit. Terrible hours, few locations, noncompetitive pricing, restricted importation......
Am I the only person that realizes the Whiskey Rebellion happened in this state (commonwealth, actually)?

In scotland you can only buy booze to take away between 10am and 10pm, and that means you aren't allowed to drink at outside tables on the street at those times, even if the bit of street belongs to the bar

That's in South Dakota. There's probably 6 people in the entire county.
By the way, just check google for "allons enfants, buvez" and see the first hit.

Wow, I can't believe no one did that before I did. Mr Gainsbourg must be smiling somewhere. Thanks for the hint.

Actually, that big red dot in South Dakota is the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. It's Federal Territory. There's no prohibitions on gambling but, apparently, the Feds don't trust the Red Folks with alchohol. I think I might make my way up there with a truckload of liquor and guns.... you know... let's just "see what happens."

didn't they try to sue a brewery for selling too much beer in a town on the edge of the reservation?JohnnyAngst wrote:Actually, that big red dot in South Dakota is the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. That must be considered a racist crime, disallowing native americans alcohol.JohnnyAngst wrote:Actually, that big red dot in South Dakota is the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. It's Federal Territory. These days I believe it is the tribal elders who come up with the rules banning alcohol on tribal lands.BBoozer wrote:That must be considered a racist crime, disallowing native americans alcohol.JohnnyAngst wrote:Actually, that big red dot in South Dakota is the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. I've played music at Indian casinos all over the States and the rules governing alcohol on tribal lands is pretty much up to the local tribes. Some allow it everywhere, some allow it only within the casinos/casino hotels and a few are totally alcohol-free. Most tribes also try to work closely with local and state governments to make sure that they aren't completely at odds regarding their respective alcohol laws.ThirstyDrunk wrote:These days I believe it is the tribal elders who come up with the rules banning alcohol on tribal lands.

Really? In England you can drink outside as long as you want provided the establishment has the relevent license. Will be interesting to see what if anything happens with devolution and Scotland trying to make its own way in the world...Mr. Viking wrote:In scotland you can only buy booze to take away between 10am and 10pm, and that means you aren't allowed to drink at outside tables on the street at those times, even if the bit of street belongs to the bar

Indeed, the last time I was there the booze control was pretty anal. Don't get me wrong, I dig Utah, but sheez, lighten up. ;)Rooster wrote:What about the entire state of Utah

also, what about the prices? Chowhound, or maybe it was egullet, anyway, had a question about what you pay for a handle of Maker's Mark. I damn near went into shock, as I read of people in other states and Canada paying 45-60 dollars. holy crap.
