Is there any truth to the rumors of generous breakage policies? I grew up in a state where the beer stores had to sell by the 24 pack and any case that was damaged had to be "destroyed". A guy that worked at a beer store claimed they had a special room in back where all the packs with 1 or more broken cans/bottles were kept for the employees to take away.

Yeah, the guy who worked there was in my HS calc II class, but he was a senior and I was a junior. One Monday he comes in and the teacher says, "'I hear you lost your license this weekend" He said, "Yeah the cops caught me drinking in the parking lot," and then explained about the special stash. I was so jealous. I think the teacher was jealous too.JimLahey wrote:Jesus Christ... The place I worked for sold "Mystery Cases" which were a box of 24 random 12oz craft beers from broken six packs. They let employees first construct their own "mystery" cases from the write-offs as long as they paid regular price for the case minus the slim 10% employee discount. Considering that most of the best beers don't come in six packs, and that all the employees had the first picking, the customer rarely got a great deal on the offer.John Barleycorn wrote:Is there any truth to the rumors of generous breakage policies?

Great deal or not I think a "mystery case" would be a great party favor. Maybe not for personal use. How much did they sell for?Chimneyfish wrote:The place I worked for sold "Mystery Cases" which were a box of 24 random 12oz craft beers from broken six packs. Around $25 if I remember correctly, but most of them were full of a lot of Newcastle and Blue Moon type stuff.

That guy sounds like one cool cat. Shit, imagine the pussy he was getting with his special stashes in high school. You must have missed the Calc II (basically the math that engineering students in college do their 3rd semester). This was a class of 3 nerds. Also, the beer store sold beer, to get wine coolers you had to go to the State store (mentioned by me upthread). I'm sure the guy has done ok in life, but the call-me-Poindexter poon shortage was in effect for all present. But if he was able to use this to overcome the odds, God bless him.JimLahey wrote:

I used to work at a beer distributor loading trucks. They let you drink on the job. I learned to operate a forklift while holding a beer.
Yeah they would practically give away the shit in the breaker pile. It was there I developed a liking for Rolling Rock, as they were always plentiful on the breaker pile for some reason'

Grumpy did, when he was twelve, but I don't think that's legal today. I worked making sandwiches at five a.m., for the construction workers who came in. Sometimes, they'd wait around until six, reading porn mags and eating sandwiches, until I could sell them beer. I was 18 or 19 then.

Re: Anyone ever work at a liquor store?
I worked at a big one in San Diego in the late 80’s early 90’s. It was like a BevMo but without the Mo. Just booze and mixers (we sold Coke, but not Pepsi for instance). Great job. Lots of slack, tasting, discounts etc. The best part was that every customer was happy to be there. My manager was a high-functioning alcoholic who felt he wasn’t paid enough. To remedy this, he held regular tastings throughout the day. Every day. I learned a lot about wine from him as he was a good teacher and really knew his shit. It was also the time when single malts were becoming popular in Southern California, so some of those freebies were pretty good as well.

I'm working part time at a convenience store that has a small liquor section and a walk-in beer cooler. My first duty when I come on shift is to stock the singles. Needless to say, a couple of those find their way down my throat while I'm getting my work done. I don't get a discount and I wouldn't dream of stealing from my boss because I like him so I always pay for what I drink before end of shift. I guess the best perk of the job is that I have pretty much unrestricted access to alcohol. I can always get my hands on booze even when the local blue laws don't allow it.

That shows character. Not biting the hand that feeds is a good policy.JohnnyAngst wrote:I always pay for what I drink before end of shift
