Why do police officers use this word to describe criminals? "This gentleman kicked his wife in the mouth...the gentleman who spat upon the senior citizen ran through the exit to the parking lot...the gentleman then pointed a gun at the clerk and demanded money."
We've all heard this shit before, why? It doesn't apply to these people.
It applies to me, the gentleman drinker (but not gentleman jack) so I say I'm being maligned by this gratuitous and inappropriate use of the word.

While the cop is saying "The gentleman..." The dude getting beat with a club is saying "What did I do SIR?"

I'd want to say "subject" or "offender" or "you" before "gentleman".
This never occurred to me.

Terms such as "sir" are mostly used as tools to elicit compliance. Conversely but by the same token, "I'll blow your fucking brains out" might be found far more effective than "stop or I'll shoot".
That's cop psychology: at the deep end of the kiddie pool.
The best cops are borderline corrupt alcoholics played by Emmy award winning actors.
