A 'fifth' my ass...

So some guys came down to the bar last night, as i was hunkering down, chatting with Bevis. They said they'd drunk a 'a fifth of vodka each'. I inquired further: 'yea we had a litre bottle between 5 of us, were doing shots. Admittedly, 8 shots of vodka would get me more drunk than an equivalent amount of pints, but this was ridiculous, such an outrageous claim.

One day soon i will drink an actual fifth of liquor in a day, cross one of the 40 things of my list, and teach them a lesson. I reckon i'm getting close to being able to do it, i can drink 20-odd units in a long night, and a fifth is 28 units.

Oh, and i'm off to bed now, later than usual as i have a later start. Roll on drunk-as-hell-friday when i have nothing the next morning!

What's the best thing to do it with, for a first attempt? Bourbon is outta the question, i'm only just getting used to it. It's between rum, vodka, and tequila, the ones i'm accustomed to drinking, any thoughts people?

If those are the choices, I'd go with Rum. A nice spiced or dark Rum would do nicely.

I don't really understand your bar-clients statement

they thought that they were drinking a fifth each by splitting a handle in ANY way other than half?

a handle is 60 ounces
a fifth is 24

Jim Beam... drink it slow, start at lunch with food and by dinnerish you'll be looking for someone to drive you to pick up a second fifth, by midnight you'll be laughing at the monkey's on black out island.

I promise you don't want to do it with Tequila. If you do, you'll never be able to drink tequila again. If you like margaritas, I'd stay away from that option.

Vodka or rum would both be good, I think. Depends on how much flavor you want. If you just want to finish off a fifth and don't mind mixing cocktails to do it, Vodka is a good option as it goes with just about everything. Of course, I would always recommend a really good whiskey if you're into that. I know you're just getting started on bourbon, but maybe a smooth scotch? I have gone through bottles of that and barely realized how close I was getting to the bottom.

The best of the best as far as I know...
I keep a bottle in the freezer at work for special occasions, like days that end in Y.

Dan, I'd stick with vodka, but that's just me. It mixes with damn near anything you put it in (besides any animal product) and its delicious neat as well.

I've been known to go through a 5th of gin in a day, but then again, I really like gin.

argh, the bourbon is so smooth... Jim Beam is an easy one to get propped up on... my first was TJD circa 1988, I just figured it was cheaper than buying the pints every day...

vodka is too easy.....

a fifth of rum might be interesting....

I would advise starting neat and then switching to a mix with cola, for the caffine content.... or vica-versa.....

either the bourbon or the rum.... if you want an expreience get a bottle of that Maker's Mark... it'll cause you to play obnoxious music too loud and kick holes in your wall by the time you get to the bottom of the label.... crap, do they even make that stuff anymore?

Mine was vodka, but I like vodka. Find soemthing you can drink straight, something you like, then get any ice, tonic, mixers , and hit it like a fat kid on a cupcake.

if your ever in Canada and in the Vancouver area look me up i will take a day off or a weekend and drink a fifth you (each that is) its fun to do

Mmmm...the fifth is my fav day of any month.
Vodka was a diificult fifth for me but that is just because I can't drink the stuff straight so it made for a lot of mixers (and consequently a lot of trips to the bathroom for, y'know...pressure relief breaks).
Whiskey is, in my opinion, the best fifth to tackle (be it scotch, kentucky, irish, or whatev).
As far as a fifth of tequila is concerned...let's just say my balance has never been quite like it was before that night. >;\
Rum may be safe tho.
