'Hurt'. It's the first song of his I ever properly listened to and now it's started something horribly close to an addiction.

I See a Darkness
Ballad of Ira Hayes
Highway Patrolman
San Quenton
Ain't No Good Chain Gang
Cocaine Blues
Austin Prison
Wanted Man
Hell the entire Murder album, I'd cut off Folsom Prison Blues (over played) and Mr. Garfield.

His covers of rock songs ("Hurt", "Personal Jesus", "Rusty Cage") intrigue me, but that has as much to do with the changes in his voice as he got older and more ill. I think his choices of tunes to cover are what impress me as much as anything...
From his older playbook, I might have to go with June and him singin' some "Jackson".
But it's not like you're gonna go wrong with too much of his stuff...

Tough call...Folsom Prison Blues, The Ballad of Ira Hayes, and One Piece at a Time are a couple faves...but a Boy Named Sue is another classic Cash tune (even if he didn't write it).

fdoosey: No, he just wanted to have fun with a shopping cart of bowling balls.
