YES you MUST re-watch it. Many many many times. Just buy it! It's worth it!
When I first saw it I was super stoned so I followed it swimmingly so maybe that helped, but I can see why it's confusing at first. It's a long movie so you have to kinda settle in and commit to it. A guarantee is... the more you watch it, the more you appreciate it and it never gets old. The story line is fantastic and I think every one of us has felt like The Dude at some point just aimlessly and innocently meandering through life and shit just hits the fan from out of nowhere.
And clearly it is one of the most quotable cult flicks, and for a reason!
