Cheap palatable booze recommendations

Post by Uncle_Meat »

Just lost my Wall St. job about a month ago. Fuck me, right! I deserve it. Yes, it was a good long ride at your expense and we're all going to pay. They dumped me without a bonus, just some small severance and now I'm going broke because I'm an old fart and no one will hire me.

I'm drawing unemployment and want to know what are the cheap decent brands of booze to consume. The shit is going to hit the fan and I would like to be unconcious without having to hold my nose or hold my breath in consuming the swill that will confer that state upon me. Any suggestions, besides a .357 mag to the temple? I'm sorry you hate my guts. I hate those I worked for. This is 1929 all over again.

Don't feel so bad! Sure, you may have clients who lost a little money, but they'll make it back if they live long enough and Obama doesn't declare a People's Republic January 20. There's no hate here, unless Lushlife, Intoxichrist or Ript show up.

Vodka by the handle is a poor man's best friend, something from the bottom shelf that mixes well with about anything, then a handle of Canada House Whiskey and a fifth of Stock Sweet Vermouth to make Manhattens out of.

That should see you through the week, along with a 16 oz. Milwalkee's Best Ice beer here and there if the party store is running a 99 cent special. It does the trick for me, but I'm also an old fart cutting back.

I always thought Gordon's Vodka was among the best of the cheap vodka, and I'd agree that if you're going bottom shelf, vodka is a good way to go. Should be somewhere around $10 a liter.

Clan Macgregor is about $17 a handle. If you developed a taste for scotch during the high times, the stuff really ain't bad.

Evan Williams, or cheaper still, Ten High. Either one of those, or both, will get you through.

Wall Street eh, and you need cheap booze recommendations? I guess you're the only one who didn't learn how to rip people off.

also gordons' gin is actually a pretty nice gin on the cheap..even makes a palatable martini. new amsterdam is the best of the lower priced gins.

also check out the potato vodkas..and i think smirnoff is still a good vodka for the price.

if they still make white horse that is a nice blended scotch for the price.

I think the key to the highest quality cheap booze is to go with anything that's been oak-aged. Gin and vodka can be really cheap since it's so easy to make, but it's more likely to taste like it. Your best bet is a bottom-shelf bourbon. A lot of them are high enough quality to drink straight. If you can stomach it, domestic brandy is a really good value. Around here E&J V.S. is only $8 a fifth. Even the E&J X.O. is under $20. But beware: Korbel is a Browne-Foreman product.

I'll second the Clan MacGregor blended Scotch - my standard pre-paycheck no money bottle. In NH you can get the plastic handle of it for $12.99.

I agree with chimneyfish - bottom shelf bourbon or brandy (brand names aren't too important).

Sometimes I see low brow supermarkets such as Aldi selling really really cheap own brand beer but I would seek to avoid that kind of stuff.

If you were in England I'd just recommend one of those big 3 litre bottles of cider from Tesco...

The Aldis here in Belgium offer up Karls Quelle Bier (18pak for 4.50 Euros).

Drink whatever domestic beer is on special, investigate and select a reasonable cheap bourbon or blended scotch that you can tolerate, and learn to make mixed drinks utilizing the cheapest clear liquors you can find.

I can deal with some $9 Kessler over $9 vodka any day. Then again, I don't like mixers.

What cheap vodka tastes like effectively becomes a non-issue since it'll be mixed with something anyway. If the idea is to not mix then vodka is not a good choice.
The last thing that anyone should ever do is feel ashamed of blacking out. You were trying to get drunk last night and, goddamnit, mission accomplished.

Step One: Invest in one of these: http://www.graykangaroo.com/

Step Two: Buy the cheapest rotgut vodka you can find.

Step Three: Hug a kangaroo.
