Hey, it's still the "original recipe". Gotta love tradition.

I wonder if some of the marketing folks are kicking themselves for lowering the proof a couple years before the whole "cocktail revolution."

A lot of bourbon/whiskey cocktails call for (and taste much better with) higher proof hooch. JD could be riding even higher as a "mixable price" whiskey for Old Fashioneds and Manhattans.

What's funny is, you go and talk to people about Whiskey and shit, and they tell you " I'm a JD Single Barrell man", like that's supposed to be impressive. wtf.

I should give 'em a link to ther Bourbon thread in TAoGH, the top shelf Whiskies reviewed in there will blow the doors off of any top shelf Brown-Foreman puts out.any.

We can still get the 90 proof over here. Not in bars I think, maybe at some selected. I never saw that nowadays, only on internet shops. I don't know if this was already posted, but I found this on the TJD wikipedia article:
The reason stated for this was that the distillery's marketing had found that customers preferred a lower proof whiskey (although the distillery debuted their 94 proof "Jack Daniel's Single Barrel" in February 1997); this also simplified the production process. This reduction in alcohol content was condemned by Modern Drunkard Magazine and a petition was formed for drinkers who disagreed with the change.[11]
Who was it? Nice.

Whoops, my mistake. I'm sipping a fifth of JD right now. Still rough, no real taste, but it gets the job done. Not unlike a $7 fifth of "Military Special" (Bottled in Baltimore). Didn't know about the proof change, seems like a low blow to hardcore drinkers like...everybody else here :-p

I was going to post something on the Bourbon thread about why Early Times wasn't reviewed, but after reading the list....never mind.

It's not just a Brown-Forman product, it's also not a Bourbon. By law, Bourbon must be aged not less than 36 months in new charred oak barrels. The problem is, those barrels cost money. So B/F, in keeping with their "profits before all else" mentality, starting aging about 20% of each run of Early Times in used barrels.

Thus, Early Times is sold as a "Kentucky Whisky", because, by law, it can't be called a Bourbon. The official mint julep of the Kentucky Derby isn't made with Bourbon, for the sake of B/F's bottom line. If you want to understand the boycott, let that last line really sink in.

Looking at the list, if Korbel is now considered to be "scab" champaigne, can anyone recommend me a good cheap one for mimosas or something? It could also be asti spumanti or other sparkling wine as well.

Yeah, it was a guy who used the space monkey av. When our newer guy used it, I thought I was talking to the other one, and much confusion reigned. I can't remember his name... where is he? Chris? Could that be it? Chris somebody? He made the petition against the lowering of the proof. Somebody help the grandma out. Things get fuzzy after fifty.

DrunkardChild.

It must be said that it was, and oh man, it pains me to say this, ruiner noticed it first. Yes, THAT ruiner. With his post titled "What? Why?", nobody else noticed, it happened regionally. We still had 86 proof TJD in NYC, but when i took a road trip to Jamaica Plain, MASS, they had the 80 up there. TJD was very crafty with that shit. I immediately got pissed off and demanded a boycott and DrunkardChild started the petition. That is the correct order of events, and those facts are undeniable.
