Hahah! That is great! Every drink should be made with that much rhythm and soul.

Ezra Brooks Kentucky sour mash bourbon whiskey for me.

Drank some Sailor Jerry.

Moved on to Liquid Trruth Serum IPAs, from Dogfish Head.

Trying some Ella Hoppy Lager from Otter Creek and I like it. Not too bitter. And Jameson's on the rocks just because.

My own interpretation of a sazerac.

This January, I was in NOLA and, at every bar we visited, I ordered a sazerac. The recipes/preparations were all over the place. Even the same bar could not make the same drink as the one I had the day before.

My sazerac for tonight:
3 ounces Old Overholt rye whiskey
½ ounce muscovado simple syrup (muscovado is a super rich sugar, with a strong taste of molasses)
7 dashes Peychauds bitters
1 dash Angostura bitters
absinthe rinse
lemon peel for garnish
Amateur demolition derby on the carpeting afterward

Drinking Admiral Nelson's spiced rum since the liquor store has been out of Kentucky Deluxe.

This stuff is super drinkable, but the low ABV is kind of a bummer. I like more of a kick.

That's funny. I was in NOLA in January too. We went to Tujague's, with the oldest stand-up bar, and supposedly the birthplace of the Sazerac, and ordered one. I thought it was a bit different from the previous trip there (15 months earlier). So I asked the bartender about it. He said "we changed the recipe."

What the fuck?

The fucking drink isn't some fucking jungle juice. It's a specific drink. With specific ingredients. And specific measurements. And a specific method of preparation. And this fucking place invented it? And 150 years later, they "changed the recipe"?

What's up with the Sazerac?

What's up with Tujague's?

Ha! He didn't know how to make a sazerac and that was his answer for why it changed.

The worst "we changed the recipe" experience I had was in Mexico. Margaritas are simple. Equal portions of tequila, triple sec, and lime juice. Seems simple enough until you stay a week at an all-inclusive resort in Puerto Vallarta for your mother-in-law's birthday. I had margaritas without lime juice, margaritas without triple sec, and margaritas without tequila. No margarita was the same from one to the next. Even when I told the bar staff how to make a margarita, they found some way to screw it up.

It's inevitable. 80 proof becomes watery tasting once you get used to over proofed stuff.

That's true. A few years back, there a was a case of Wray & Nephew white rum available for a helluva deal, so I became quite used to the flavor of overproof daiqhiris and swigs of lovely burn from the bottle. Going back to 80 proof seemed almost hollow somehow.

Rum? I never touch the stuff.
