Mad Men
Watching the premiere of Mad Men for the second time. There were some ritualistic pre-viewing drinking before the first viewing, which hazed things a bit, so it deserves a third watching. I've already noticed a few things I missed. First off--it's fucking awesome. Don unbounded. The booze flows. I feared there would be some sort of reckoning, but it appears things will rollick along as splendidly as before.

Re: Mad Men
It was good, too many rocks in the glasses though for my tastes, but the style, the style of the whole thing is undeniable.

Re: Mad Men
The creative dept didn't bother with ice--Jameson straight up .
Canadian Club on ice in Drapers office, and I don't blame him. Recent divorce. Roger prefers the vodka, no ice.
I'm certain, by now, they're selling that iconic glassware somewhere.

Re: Mad Men
Rogers threw in one single ice cube in his voddie, I thought Draper had ice in his. I Tivo'd it as i watched it, will watch again to be sure. I do remember the single cube of ice.
The production designer hits garage sales high and low out here ( Palm Springs ) and elsewhere finding the actual stuff from that time period. She is on the fucking money, and worth every penny they pay her. Entertainment Weekly gave her a solid write up. I'd like her to come in and redesign the home bar. We emulated that sixties/swing feel, and we did a good job, a very good one, but if she could go over my glassware and other assorted oddities, we'd be blessed.

Re: Mad Men
I've not seen the show, yet.
I did run across this while surfing-The Ultimate Mad Men Guide to NYC Bars and Restaurants:

Maybe someday I'll make it to NYC. I do like the ambience of the few scenes of the series that I've caught on the tv.

Re: Mad Men
Do not get your hopes up bar-wise. The real deal is in the outer boroughs and not Manhattan, unless you are far uptown or way down downtown, forget it. You want real drinking in NYC, it's all about the Bronx and Brooklyn. Midtown Manhattan ( Mad Men territory ) is all pretentious bullshit. Growing up in the Bronx, to go out drinking in Manhattan was a let down, it was like "damn, Manhattan? damn... for how long do we have to be there??"rune wrote:I've not seen the show, yet.

It's no prize on the drinking scale.

Re: Mad Men
It's what makes the series so brilliant. Attention to detail. The smoking, the drinking, the womanizing, the nihilism--which some contemporaries have condemned as myths and others have sworn as gospel.TheBigCasino wrote:Rogers threw in one single ice cube in his voddie, I thought Draper had ice in his. Re: Mad Men
I've yet to run into a series that captured a moment in time like Mad Men. If I could have a couple of bottles just sitting around the office, jeebus. I'd never be late again.

While I'll agree that there are plenty of pretentious spots in midtown - there are far more on the lower east side with the swarm of entitled hipsters. Blech. There are places if you know where to look. And Brooklyn? I'm gonna need a hell of a tour guide to make me love Brooklyn. Though I have no argument with you Bronx-wise - perhaps it being my origin - perhaps it just being cooooool. I know lots of cool joints in Da Bronx - myself and the Big C agree on the Bronx being a desirable destination - been to the Newsroom and the Alta Vega near The Stadium?

Flesh out a story by properly placing drinks, how they accepted, drank, turned down..
Attention to detail, yessir..
