If you don't want to use an actual IRC client like mIRC or something, just follow the web-based Mibbit instructions he posted. The only difference is that if you are having troubles connecting, replace "irc.ossnow.net" with "irc.ossnow.net:6668"
I know, I know, IRC is sort of becoming a lost and archaic relic of the internet, but we have a ton of fun in there. It's worth it. To help out, here's a couple of the IRC clients I know of that you can use if you don't want to just use Mibbit:
IceChat
mIRC
Both sites have a "Download" or "Get" link somewhere on the page. Download it, install it, and you should be able to plug in the server address when you figure out how the program works. There's usually a help file or getting started link on the page or with the program. irc.ossnow.net is still giving a bit of issues for some people on the default port of 6667, so like mentioned before, you may have to enter the custom port of 6668. I haven't personally tried IceChat so I can't vouch for it, but a lot of people that hit up the server seem to like it. I personally use mIRC with the NoName Script add-on, but I only do that for the built in themes and color schemes it has. Regular mIRC will work, and even though it gives you a 30 day trial screen, you can use it forever, but just have to deal with the nag screen for about 20 seconds each time you fire it up after that.
And since I at least know mIRC, which is one of the most widely used IRC clients, I'll attempt a walkthrough for newbies here:
mIRC Connection Instructions
Server selection:
-Go to the File... menu.
-Under the Category: window, scroll up and select Connect if you haven't already.
-You will see a slot for Full Name and Email Address. Don't worry what you put here. Drop a cat on the keyboard and fill them in with some random numbers or something, those fields haven't been important in decades.
-in the Nickname: field, put your desired nickname to chat with. In my case, "Veen" works.
-In the Alternative: field, put a nick you want to use in the instance your first one is taken. I've personally been using "Veen-" or some other random character after "Veen" for that.
-Click "Connect to server" and away we go!
Getting to the chat channel:
-You will see a window come up and put out text similar to the following:
Connecting to irc.ossnow.net (6668)
welcome to the network, [Veen!~[email protected]]
there are [0] users and [10] invisible on [2] servers
[1] unknown connection(s)
[7] channels formed
i have [10] clients and [1] servers
raw [265]: 10 users on this server. Max: 11
raw [266]: 10 users on entire network. Max: 23
usermode set to [+ix]
raw [608]: Your WATCH list is now empty
raw [603]: You have 0 and are on 0 WATCH entries
* No one in your notify list is on IRC
-You will also see a bar along the bottom you can type things into. Select this, and type the command "/j #drunkardchat"
-You will now be in the channel. Type shit in at the bottom, and read what is being said in the rest of the window.
-Pour one and join us. Cheers!
I should mention that these instructions are all for people running Windows. If you're running a Mac I have no idea what clients are out there but Mibbit should still work in any modern browser. If you're running Linux there's a ton more clients you could be using, but if you're the type of person that runs Linux on your regular home computer, you probably don't need me telling you how to install and run an IRC client.
I can also answer questions if anyone has any issues connecting or using a client. I know how much of a pain it can be to use IRC for the first time. Hopefully though this helps some of you?

It's loaded. Both me and the chat!
May those who love us, love us
and those who don't love us, may god turn their hearts
and if he can't turn their hearts, may he turn their ankles
so we'll know 'em by their limping!
Drunk Orson Welles Outtake
Rise drunkards, rise! Rise for shots, and for drinks, and the liver ending!

Good stuff, and it's only mildly complicated when using Mibbit...

Pretty much anyone, on any operating system, with a remotely modern browser, should be able to run Mibbit. Firefox, Avant, Opera, IE, etc. I don't think there's any current internet browser that won't properly do Mibbit.
