"Has MDM Failed?"

Post by Judge »

This topic comes up from time to time. Let me set it straight.

Some of you think if a magazine doesn't show up in your mailbox then MDM has failed.
If Frank doesn't post here. MDM has failed.
If the website hosting this bulletin board fucks up from time to time then MDM has failed.

I suspect some do not understand what MDM is trying to accomplish.

Not too many years ago, people such as ourselves represented a majority of adults. Years of feel good nanny state and the intrusion of pesky doctors, car insurance companies and madd mothers suddenly drove us into the shadows.

When MDM and Frank came on the scene we were reminded that it is not an embarrassment to live our lives the way we do. He gave us tools to reach out to each other across the nation and the planet, to reconnect to the commonality that we are all getting shit upon by life, government, exwives, etc. and that through the millennia booze has allowed the common folk, the downtrodden and the rich elite to come together in drunken revelry and comraderie.

In my life Frank allowed me to hold my head high, to explore new places with a renewed zest for life, to add to my family and stretch my liver to the fullest. I have friends now across the globe that would never ever have happened. I have grandchildren who won't be raise to think "grandpa's drinking is a problem". I flew to Rochester in fucking January in a blizzard to end all blizzards to hang out in a shitty apartment (no offense Mayhem but well, you know), ate lobster fresh from the ocean in Mass, laughed with a Brit and watched a Hungarian pass out in my kitchen.

I made French food, was indoctrinated to a Scottish clan, let a New Englander marry my daughter. I could go on for chapters and so could most of you.

If you had mini conventions/invasions. If you married or spirited fellow drunkards across the continent, if you've traveled the globe just to hoist a few with your fellow imbibers, if you've called from the far east for help to get another member sprung from a Dubai jail........you have MDM to thank.

And if you engaged in several bad relationships, no good comes without bad. Sorry again you know who.

The magazine could fold today. This website could fold tomorrow and MDM will not have failed. It will have served its mission in how we rose up from the fake disdain of our pussified society. We hold our heads high, we do not apologize for how we live as we live well with most of the people of history.

MDM has succeeded because you are here. If it should go away someday, what you have learned, the fellowship you have entered into, the pleasure you glean from a good glass of bourbon/scotch/beer/wine/vodka/gin/palmwine etc., will be all the more satisfying as you know it is right that you enjoy it and let the world pass away for at least a little bit until the harsh light of the next workday pounds its merciless radiation into your suffering brain.

I'll have no more talk about MDM and failing. It has succeeded beyond its founders wildest imagination. Actually he might imagine much more but its the gin talking.

Cheers to that!

Because of this board I have met, drank with, hosted, and been hosted by some very fine folk indeed. People I am glad to call my friends.
Because of this board I found the most out of the way/unmarked/heavy pouring dive bar when DH and I took a trip to Sacramento--the shenanigans and adventures that followed are legendary.
Because of this board I no longer have to wake up in the morning guiltily thinking "shit, what in the hell did I post last night!?" Here nobody is judged unkindly for an incoherent, perhaps slightly nasty, but definitely rambling, post.
I could go on, and perhaps will at a later point, but my replenishment of booze has arrived and I must see to it.

I raise my beer to all of you fine MDMers.

Some mod should sticky this. :)

I remember the looks on my friends' faces (those who don't understand the community that is formed from something so simple as an internet message board) when I told them we were flying to Denver to a convention of drunkards; driving 12 hours to Massachusetts for a drinking invasion; or headed to tiny Elmwood, IL for the MWI.

Judge, truer words have never been spoken and so eloquently. My first drink tonight is to you!

MDM has not failed, and this is coming from someone who has had his differences with the whole thing.

MDM has not failed.

Let's go back a bit, when ya drank and before you knew it, you drank more than everyone else, you revelled in it. Yes, your friends did to - but not as much as you, and nowhere near enough as you. "Hey, maybe I'm alone, and born to drink everything, could this whole thing be wrong?"

and then you run into MDM

and you discover that no - you are not alone, and yes, you are pretty much just learning.
"but hey! these are just people on the internet, they could be full of shit! It doesn't mean anything in the real world".

enter the conventions and the subsequent Invasions.

Then it became "Holy Shit, this is real". I'm not gonna list every drunkard I've met on this board ( some of whom more than once ), there isn't enough bandwith. the second you sit alongside the bar with another drunkard, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about. All of a sudden, you 'aint alone, you are the majority, even if it's two or three of you in a bar with 100 people, YOU GUYS are the majority.

No, it has not failed. I used to feel wierd sneaking flasks and bottles into dry places, then I heard "No kid, this is what you are supposed to do". Drinking alot. You are not alone. We are not alone. This. is. what. we. do. and I would like to point out, that us, doing what we do around others, inspires others to do the same. No, MDM has not failed.

All the heavy hitters laid the groundwork, Frank, Poe, Dino, Hemingway, Oliver, Parker, Jackie, Bacall, all the hits, somebody's gotta keep that glorious time where art meant something and good Whiskey was everything. Quit your worrying, pick up a glass and show 'em how it's done. They would want us to, "here's what I've done, go out and make it better", and that is exactly what we are here for.
BMMS is wrong.

let a New Englander marry my daughter
...so much funny could be made of this one...

MDM has created friendships, sometimes enduring ones; friends that have ended up being there for each other during the bad times. This board has seen marriages, divorces, births, deaths and, even though the members may not 'know' each other or have drank with each other, they post their congratulations and their sympathies.

MDM has seen members come and go, come back and go again; but as a wise old timer (Palinka) said: 'it's all about the ebb and flow' (or something to that effect).

MDM has not failed. it has evolved, and continues to do so.

MDM has not failed at all.

Because of MDM I have flown to Denver and Ohio to Drink with folks I have never met.

And have a hoot of a time doing so.

I knew the Con was gonna be great but who the fuck would know that going to Ohio to get Drunk with some MDMers would be the best vacation I would ever have.

And having Surreal, Gin, and Ivan at my house last year was Awesome! Insanity at its finest.

None of this could have happened without MDM.

And I say Thank You, MDM.

Cheers!

While I've not met any of the other fine MDM'ers face to face, I've had several rambling, drunken, and believe or not, some what edifying conversations via Ma Bell. Also, I've received some darn fine hooch from regions across the fruited plain......and Texas.

Cheers, MDM!

Personally, I had my first drink only 3 years ago. I felt very strange, to say the least, drinking every night, in the morning sometimes, etcetera. My drinking buddy informed me of the magazine, and It really turned a page in my life. Not that I needed any confirmation of my lifestyle, but yeah, it helps to know there's other great drunks of all varieties, especially ones who're still alive. It helps to get tips, tricks, and musings from fellow drunks. And a few of them are even willing to put it in a magazine.

So in summary, Modern Drunkard Magazine has not failed.

MDM has not failed. Who would say such a thing? This site is the only place where people who love to drink and truly enjoy the freedom and camaraderie surrounding alcohol can come together. I have not posted in a while since I was in Afghanistan where you cannot enjoy a cocktail or two after a hard day. Thank you general order 1 and I can honestly say I did not offend my Afghan hosts by indulging. I am truly convinced that if those people took a break from killing one another for a few hours to enjoy a few drinks together, we would not be in the state of affairs we are in right now. Now I am home and the site is still running hard. Bravo MDM keep up the good fight. Drink up fellow drunkards and enjoy the sweet taste of freedom.

Anyone going to be in Vegas the weekend of December 4th? I have to drink and gamble the stench of that repressive war off of me.
