Haha, I hear y'all. And i'm not too proud to explain my original intent. Here, in a bar, a boilermaker is a straight shot o whiskey chased with a beer. When i'm home, it's very clearly a large swig of bourbon on the rocks with a beer back. So I guess what I was wondering (not positive though because i was wasted when i first posted) is if you're enjoying a shot of whiskey and a beer, would you rather have a decent whiskey and a cheap beer, or a cheap whiskey and a decent beer? Does that make more sense?

One more question. Is the beer chase a full beer or just like 3 oz. in a small glass? Around here a beer back is just a small one, and as smatter said around here it's a full shot of whiskey dropped into a mostly full glass of beer, then chugged. That's quite a bit different than doing a shot and then just sipping a little beer as a chase.

I remember a boilermaker (@1970/SoCal) as being a shot of well-whiskey and a short, @9oz draft on the side. Guys would shoot the shot and then suck down the 9oz'er in one swig. If you wanted it stacked (the shot dropped into @9oz of beer in a 12oz glass), you asked for your boilermaker 'wet'.

Speaking for myself, a boilermaker is a shot of whiskey ordered along with a full-size beer (usually a 12oz bottle or can). Now, as drunkards, we needn't be "chasing" our shots with anything. I just like having a beer at my leisure after I take a shot.

I was thinking that too, Chilidawg, but if you have to do one before the other, I'd rather do good whiskey, then put the fire out with cheap beer.
