In quiet reflection: Or, writing under the influence

Post by ltwhiskas »

So do you do it? Do you prefer it? I know this isn't by any means a new question, especially since many of the legends that grace the halls of drunkdom were authors and damn fine ones. But do you, as a rule, make a point to write for fun or work while sligging them back?

I'd venture to guess that those who do, like me, enjoy libations to get the process rolling, the meat on the table, and iron things out the morning after.

Your thoughts?

I think both are important, the ups and downs make for good writing.

Without alcohol, I don't think I'd have found the ideas or experiences upon which I base my writing.

When it comes to "serious" writing, I prefer to be undrunk. Hence why my output is so limited.

^ most certainly.

I write drunk, but what I write is mostly code. Strangely(?), I am much better able to code a puzzle when drunk than to solve it.

I'm also totally anal about editing English, which is why all my posts aren't very drunk-sounding. If only you knew the pain of my backspace button...

Interesting fact: Hemingway never wrote while drunk.
I'll miss you, pallie.

so he claimed, a lot of writers say that, that they write solidly in the morning. Probably still drunk from the night before though

I wrote okay when undrunk. I write far better, when drunk, to a certain point. Which is actually pretty far down the line. After that, my writing sucks, because I am totally schnockered.

I write random bits of semi-intelligible shite when I'm drunk and try to put it all into a story the next day. It's loads of fun, like a puzzle, I'm fuckin hilarious, but it sure as hell ain't literature.

Interesting. Write drunk and edit undrunk seems to be the standard. I'd say anything with dialogue is certainly helped while tipping them back.
