One drink too many, a thousand never enough

Post by coqui_chris »

Raising a glass to Brendan Behan, fine iconoclastic Dublin writer who passed away 50 years ago on March 20. Ok, so it was yesterday; drink two for Penance. "I only drink on two occasions: When I'm thirsty, and when I'm not"

A fine time to crack open a bottle of whiskey and listen to The Pogues "The Auld Triangle (lyrics by B. Behan).

My favourite story about Behan was when he was accosted in a New York bar by an awestruck neophyte who ran at the great man, crying out, "Oh my god! You're Brendan Behan!"
To which the author responded, with similar enthusiasm, "Oh my god! You're the man who'll be buying th'night's drinks!"
"If I had all the money that I've spent on drink, I'd spend it on drink!"
"The trouble with internet quotes is that one can never be sure if they are genuine." - Abraham Lincoln
Kindly listen to this, please.

He was in the same class in school as my grandfather.

I bought a stamp on Wednesday, first time I'd done that in years, and it was a Brendan Behan stamp.

A good enough reason to then have a drink.

Got any tales from the old man?

That's gas. I've gotta get that stamp.

Unfortunately my grandad died before I was old enough to truly appreciate Mr. Behan. I'll ask my dad, though, next time I see the old man. He's a bit of a family historian so he'll surely have a tale or two that my grandad would've recounted to him over several glasses of whiskey in his favourite pub.

I like this though:
Bredan's uncle wrote the Irish national anthem "The Soldier's Song". My grandad's uncle Liam was the chief translator in the first (free) Irish parliament and he translated it into the Irish language version that we all sing today, "Amhránn na bhFiann". Small world, huh?

If anyone wants the stamp I'll gladly send it over wherever. It's only 60c.

I heard a story that Brendan's driver was originally a Pioneer who later died of liver disease

And sent it he did. Thank ye Bobby Stout, here's a shot of black rum raised to you. May the weather fare you better than the stove warms the night. Slainté
