What are/were your parents' favorite libations?

Post by μεθύστακας »

I just happened to mention to a friend in the course of conversation that my dad's number one drink of choice back in the day was Gin & Tonic (made with Beefeater Gin to be specific...we're talking the 60's/70's). My mom I'm not so sure about but if I had to say, I think she was partial to the Old Fashioned. Yours?

Manhattens. Strictly speaking, Trilby cocktails, but Dad was able to teach me a lot after a couple of these under his belt.

My dad is into scotch. Mom likes red wine the best, it's like the only drink with alcohol that she'll have.

Dad likes blended Scotch.
Mother also enjoys blended Scotch but is not all discriminating in the tipples she imbibes.

Dad was always just a beer guy. PBR back in the day, then moved on to Genny Light. Nowadays it's that Bud 55 cal. shit. He always drank some local mountain folks homade wines. Guy who made it was called Hog Head. Only hard stuff he ever drank was Hog Head's Applejack. That shit was good.

Mom back when she drank was always Miller Lite. As for other stuff, whatever passing hippy type homemade hooch was popular, meads, dandelion wine, some sort of cherries jubilee shit was the last thing she made. That was 20 or more years ago.

Both my parents drank beer (various brands, usually whatever was on sale). I was only 9yo when my mom died, so I don't really recall what else she might've drank, but my dad liked Jim Beam and old Grand-Dad bourbon.

Dad is a big fan of stabbing his finger in a cocktail recipe book and having a go. Mum loves scotch, but won't let herself drink it because of the consequences. Pragmatically though, I would say both of them favour wine, as that's what they drink most of.

Mom only drank a beer when we had a weekend cold cuts luncheon. Daddy used to have a Bud or two while he was swapping out the tubes on our tv on Saturday. Oh, and at Christmas, Tom and Jerrys, and an occasional Grasshopper. Really, I don't know who left me on their doorstep.

It was my Injun momma who made elderberry wine. She collected them by the pond on our tiny island. Yes, my mother smelled like elderberries. My father smelled like apple tobacco from his pipe, and Crown Royal. Rest his soul.

Very much enjoyed just now reading the responses to my thread. When I joined this forum 11 years ago (under a different incarnation) I had a son who was only 12 years old at the time. He is now in his 4th year at university. Funny how it only took a quarter or two at college before he overcame his staunch anti-booze stance. On a recent home visit he attempted to educate me on currently popular college drinking games and apprised me of a few potent libations that I was not familiar with. I need to find out what his favorite is and maybe make this thread a sort of multi-generational thing. lol

In uk folklore it is very important not to take all of the flowers, some has to be left for the elder who owns the tree, so they can make their wine. Otherwise they will be angry and the tree won't flower again
