My uncle always told me that Sinatra mainly had the glass as a prop. But Dean Martin, at least according to my uncle, was a sterling drinker.
Major Strasser: What is your nationality?
Rick: I'm a drunkard.
Captain Renault: That makes Rick a citizen of the world.

According to several journos, at least while Dean was working the Summit at the Sands with the Rat Pack in the early '60's, he didn't drink liquor. He had prop alcoholic drinks but played the role well.

I had always heard Martin was a phony drinker in the early years and only really went at it in earnest after his son died.

That was such a sad ending. There was a Rat Pack reunion a few years after his son's death and he was a mess. Walked off the stage in the middle of the act and tossed his lit cigarette into the audience.

And that may be why, from what I have read, that Mr. Sinatra was a bit of a cranky prick, whereas Mr. Martin was a mellow fellow.

But, all I know is what I read on the internet, and the papers, and books. I mean, these guys were born before my father-in-law (RIP, Papa), was born. Decades before my parents were born. Gee, they were born when cars and movies were new!
