Malts and other cheap strong blasters

Post by gede »

I had the pleasure of visiting the USA recently and was very excited to sample some malt liquor. Cheap beer is my staple, so the thought of getting it even cheaper and considerably stronger has always held appeal. Sampled the following:

- mickeys (ex)
- colt 45 (bit sweet but decent)
- oe 500 (40 drove me into Insta blackout most times after couple beers??)
- hurricane (hg 25 oz was perfection, east Coast seemed only to have a weaker 40)

Anyway, any fans? Seems like a bit of a cult speciality from what. I gather but keen to hear your favourites

Proper etiquette involves consuming this out of the can or bottle, wrapped in a paper bag, whilst sitting on the front porch in the middle of what used to be known as a work day.

Too harsh?

Likely didn't give much of a shit about it either way after a rack of 'em.

Excavated this thread of mine as I was reminiscing about Steel Reserve, another HG malt I sampled overseas. Can’t say I ‘enjoyed’ the taste from, well, memory if that applies, but you can’t turn your nose up at a solid buzz for $2.

Got me thinking, what’s the strongest cheap beer available in your country, barring high end crafty stuff? I’m talking cornershop cans with the percentage loudly emblazoned on the side. 500ml of terror

Edit: may be less of a pub thread now and more taogh... move as desired

Excellent excavation, gede.

It's been far too long since I've spent some quality time (ie. pass out on the front lawn in my skivvies) with the rollicking likes of OE 800 and Baltika 9. Any sort of beer with a number in the name is a winner.

Gave a friend a ride once, but I didn't want an open bottle in the car, so I asked him to slam the full Mickey's he'd just opened. He did. But then he proceeded to open the car door, puked up a stream of beer onto the street and said "man, what a waste".

Back when I was pre twenty-one I would go to this one bar I would go to to see bands play. They sold grenades but the bartender would only loosen the cap and leave it on. This made it easier for an older friend to smuggle them in to me in the crowded room where the rock n roll was going on.

Ah the good old days.

Ah, the big Baltika 9! I found a litre size CAN of this in Hanoi, Vietnam. It required two hands and tasted fairly foul. along with Oettinger Pils 10% it really livened up a 15 hour train ride. I even kept the can, sentimental as I am about these things.

You are right about the numbers in the name. They don’t even have to correspond to ABV but they unfailingly promise a good time.

You know when it comes in a 2 liter plastic bottle you've truly hit bottom shelf.

I may be in the minority but I’m a big fan of plastic bottle booze. I respect a company that front up and say “you don’t give a shit what this tastes like, neither do we. Let’s get loaded and not beat around the bush.” Not a regular thing for me personally (and there’s almost zero of it in aus) but I appreciate it when in the mood.
