In New Zealand you get a lot of craft beer in plastic bottles. Traditionally flagons, or riggers, as they’re sometimes known, were the cheapest way to buy takeaway beer and were fairly uninspiring. Nowdays, it seems, small breweries produce kegs rather than going to the expense of bottling. So, you can get some really nice beers in flagons. Sprig & Fern, a chain of brewpubs, have their flagons in supermarkets all over the country. There’s also lots of local outfits now that either sell straight from their own brewery/brewpub, or have a distribution agreement with an independent bottle shop.

Sorry, a bit off topic, since you’re talking about cheap beer here. Still, when I was a youngster, 14-16 years old, a flagon of DB, bought by the oldest looking guy in our group from the Gladstone, drunk in Hagley Park, was the way to start a Friday evening before walking into town to hang about in the Cashel Street pedestrian mall to talk to girls.
