In memorial to Jeannie the Bartender

Post by Badfellow »

Bartenders die every day.

It doesn't necessarily make it any easier though when the bartender in question is young, strawberry-blonde Irish pretty, intelligent and genuinely kind of the soul.

Jeannie was only 28, and she was my favorite maker of Long Island and Texas Teas, a girl who would play shit like Soul Coughing and Fleetwood Mac amidst the usual dregs of sheister hip-hop music.

The details are a little sketchy, but she had a miscarriage which caused her to loose consciousness and, somehow, she managed to strangle herself by her own hoodie. She was hospitalized brain dead for several days before her mother and three brothers decided to pull the plug.

On the upside, donations have overwhelming with over $18,000 cash raised for her funeral expenses in less than 5 days. A service is planned for 4:30 PM tomorrow. Being a bartender and a fine Irish lass, I can only imagine that it'll entail a proper wake with plenty of whiskey had by all.

Cheers, my dear. We shall miss you.

Eh, I had bit of a wake up in these matters as well, when I heard that long time bouncer (and part time bartender) of my favorite haunt had suffered crippling back injury. He was always very reasonable, it was fun to spent time on patio talking about random shit and he generally just seemed like a-ok person. I mean he once drove me home when I got utterly recklessly drunk in middle of winter. After 11 hour shift. Haven't run to one like that guy within Finnish borders since (with our asshole laws and all that).

Shit happens I guess. Though I think people grossly underestimate what it takes to shine in these professions.

Cheers.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to make the service due to work. But the wake at the bar was damn proper... we started in at 5 PM and kept things running wet until around midnight. It is better to celebrate life lived that to mourn life lost.

Indeed we shall, fellow Drunkard. Hopefully the shit times are nothing that a good, brisk bottle of whiskey can't mitigate.

Occasionally we meet people who change our lives for the better. These people are called bartenders.

Totally stolen from the web. Appropriate nonetheless.

Till we meet in Valhalla.
