International Drinking Days

Post by Dear Booze »

Four years ago, I had a tremendous idea to start a drinking holiday.

http://www.drunkard.com/bbs/viewtopic.p ... 0#p1112178

But as drunkards do, I got sidetracked. And then every year, during the first weekend of August, I remember and tell myself that I will get on it earlier "next year". So here we are. We have the opportunity to start a god-dammed movement. We have two months to plan a three-day bender that will start on August 4th.

So how do we get this thing up to speed? Anyone ever start a holiday before? How did Easter get started? Forget that. I don't want to kill anyone.

Wait. Baby steps. At this point, we just need to commit to celebrate international customs and traditions through drinking.

A name. Prince Edward killed Simon de Montfort at the Battle of Evesham on 4 August. Americans may not go for that as de Montfort is celebrated as a pioneer of democracy; and Edward was a baddie in the movie Braveheart.

No... wait. 4 August is the date traditionally ascribed to Dom Perignon's invention of champagne in 1693. "Come quickly, I am tasting the stars!" How about Champagne Day?

Or... Anti-Terrorism day. Everyone knows Muslims don't drink, so what better way to belittle Islamofascism than a holiday dedicated to drinking?

Or Transgender Rights Recognition Day? Apparently that shit is super important right now.

This ain't no fuckin "Silent Night". No figgy pudding bullshit either, unless that's like soggy wet rum cake, then I'll give it a try.
Time for Oettinger to whip us up some Drinking Day carols.

Although International Drinking Days is my first choice for a name, I agree with Binger's recognition that a tie-in to some sort of main stream theme would make it a more acceptable to the folks who don't imbibe on a regular and heavy basis. The Dom Perignon/Champagne Day tie-in is brilliant. But I'm afraid it might be too narrow. I think we need to celebrate drinks from all cultures. Sake, Scotch, Tequila, Bourbon, Schlivowitz, Maneschewitz, etc. I believe it's the key to buy-in from folks outside our small Modern Drunkard community.

We simply must include them Drys. What if we took that Doogh (yoghurt, mint stuff and club soda) and instead used Bailey's, Creme de menthe and Champagne? It's like the Mimosa: an excuse for the Ladies to drink in the morning so the men can have a Bloody Mary along with them. Maybe slip in a little rum for a kick.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I propose the Dr. Dooghie Howizter, not to be confused with Doogie Houser.

I have done no taste testing for recipe measures, I'm just farting out of me noggin here.

You, good Lady, are a rare individual indeed. Also, thank you for participating in this Drunkard bunch of miscreants. It's like home, for me.

Count me in as well. Now listen, I sing horribly at high levels, simply because it goes into crackly falsetto like when I was an early teen, and then it scrambles and gets hoarse, and I sound like Tom Waits. Judging by your elevation, you might be a baritone. What does your falsetto sound like?
