Calendar of Drinking Days

Bloody Mary Day
January 1, 2021

It's no coincidence that National Bloody Mary Day follows the busiest drinking day of the year, AKA Amateur Night.

Jan. 3. Barley Wine Day

Why not? Deep into winter, it makes sense. And it's the reason that brought me to the boards. Might as well celebrate

Today is Baltic Porter Day

Baltic Porter originated in England in the 1700s when brewers created a stronger version of their English Porter to withstand a lengthy ship’s journey to countries along the Baltic Sea. The cold and dreary days of January are the perfect time celebrate the roasted, smoky malt and high alcohol content of Baltic Porter.

Nice, Devils Backbone has a Baltic Porter. I think I'm going to break my temporary no-beer rule and get a six pack of it.
I've always been a fan of porters

I had to fix that for you

This appears to be a prototype of IPA. What I was told the British had no refrigeration so they discovered that using and incredible amount of hopps would preserve it from turning sour. This also reminds me of barleywine.

Today is Hot Buttered Rum Day.

There are a bunch of reasons why Hot Buttered Rum is the perfect focus of this perfectly timed drinking holiday. First, it's January, and everything is cold and gloomy and shitty and everyone needs a good excuse to tie one on. Even them non-embibers. Second, this bold and warm drink is pure cocktail comfort food. Finally, this drink is a good excuse to use some of those liqueurs that have been gathering dust on your bar cart since the 1980s. It's an endlessly customizable drink; go ahead and use whatever you got. There are no rules. You can use this as your starter kit, and then go from there.

Since I'm not a fan of cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice, I like to go with a basic Irish Coffee with Jameson, Pyrate, unsweetened whipped cream, and a little honey.

January 18th is Malt Liquor King Day in the USA. Be sure to pick up a 40 or a tallboy today (ice beer doesn't count) and celebrate your freedom to drink inexpensive, high gravity malt beverages.
