My grandfather’s army discharge papers; looks like he drank a lot

Post by Badfellow »

I was rummaging through an old box of papers recently belonging to my deceased grandparents, Rest In Peace. Bland stuff, really. Old receipts, insurance policies, bank statements from 1982, about as entertaining as a dry, stale fart.

Except— deep down in archives of banal, financial Americana came an unexpected surprise, which is the very reason why we must sift through so many pebbles to find the real gems. Dated 1950, Fort Reilly, Kansas, reads my grandfather Jack’s discharge papers from the US Army. For your consideration, a few of the highlights are as follow:

*Court marshaled 4 times for being A.W.O.L.

*Lacks proper discipline and motivation due to excessive drunkenness

*"Has shown no desire to change his conduct and is a bad influence on the other soldiers of this organization"

*Recommendation: Discharge from service because of unfitness/ undesirability

He was also confirmed to have punched an E-5 sergeant in the mouth while on weekend pass, although this morsel is not included amongst the crumbs of these particular papers.

Not a flattering record, you may say? In one manner of speaking, my grandfather Jack was a war hero. It just depends which war you talk about fighting. It’s also fair to note that he retired accident free from a 35 year career as a long haul truck driver and still managed to put down 3 cases of Old Milwaukee per week.

He was in from 1947 to 1950, so basically he barely managed to drink his way out of going to Korea.

Thought it would be about then, the military did a lot of B.S., they were downsizing, and really didn't want people, also the lower ranking officers were mostly but hurt school boys.
