Re: "Americans" & "America"
Although this post is ancient history, I find it interesting as it never occurred to me until now as an American living in Europe. A German teacher told me to say I am from the U.S.A.- to differentiate which part of the Americas I am from.Frankennietzsche wrote: ↑Thu Sep 18, 2014 9:31 pmI recently came across a comment in a news-blog piece that stated that it was presumptive for persons in the United States of America to call themselves “Americans” because it was exclusive to other denizens of the “Americas”, and more specifically, to the indigenous persons of the two American continents. It seems that this is not necessarily a new thing.
It seems that most people from the USA call themselves “Americans.” Also, most refer to the country as “America” while those from other English-speaking countries refer to the country as “the States”, but I may be wrong about that part.
It is interesting to note that our neighbor to the immediate south is, officially, the Estado Unidos Mexicanos.
givemesomepils wrote: ↑Tue Sep 23, 2014 11:51 amI guess we just call ourselves americans because it's the only country that has america in it's name and what else would we call ourselves i mean there really isn't anything that sounds as good as that that you can get from usa.
besides you have to specify north or south american if you want to call yourself one of those, but cmon really people are actually complaining about what people call themselves. we are in the UNITED STATES of AMERICA in NORTH AMERICA so we should have the right to call ourselves that if we so please.
This makes a bit of sense to me. For example, Canada is in N.A., they are referred to as "Canada". If you are from Costa Rica, I would imagine you would say, "I'm from Costa Rica" not "Central America". So I guess what we should technically be saying is "I'm from the U.S.". The America part would be implied as Canada doesn't say "Canada of America".

Re: "Americans" & "America"
In Pattaya Beach Thailand, back in the 1980s, there was a sign in a bar that said "we have free food for USA Navy." Notice - it did not say "American" Navy. I've always made it a point to say I'm from "USA" not "America."
BTW, the name of that bar was Alice Bar on Patong Beach. I always wondered if it was destroyed in that tsunami in the late 90's (or was it early 00,s?).

Anyway please enjoy this interview which appears to be conducted by Dear Booze (via Rooster Teeth), quizzing a British teenager on his knowledge of U.S. history. It's good for a few laughs.

Shame the term USA-er doesn't appear to have caught on.

Ha that's great. You are close because in Deutsch you are an "Amerikaner" (I'm an Amerikanerin -female). Oett confirmed that Amerikaner implies we are from U.S.A., which is confusing considering Germany is the country that says "American" is too ambiguous when considering other America's such as South, Central, Canada etc. Go figure!

Amerikaner doesn't exactly roll off the tongue. Those wacky Germanians have done it again.

Bernie on RT should do a thing that’s instead of a British kid about amurrica, it’s about millennials and which sexual orientation they identify with.Artful Drunktective wrote: ↑Sat Feb 15, 2020 12:14 pmAnyway please enjoy this interview which appears to be conducted by Dear Booze (via Rooster Teeth), quizzing a British teenager on his knowledge of U.S. history. Probably many showed up drunk already, thinking that they had landed in India or else fallen off the flat disc and landed on a lower disc.
As for first Drunkard: Oett, I've seen birds snacking on fallen fruit form trees that fermented on the ground in the hot summer. They couldn't even fly. Birds got a clue, probably bears and ungulates as well.
Cheers to fermentation. It exists, always has, and there's a reason for it.
