Russ Solomon, the founder of Tower Records died yesterday.
For those of us of a certain age: Tower Records was ubiquitous. It was the indie record store; but HUGE. Wal-Mart for everything musical. Growing up in Northern California, Tower Records was everywhere, and it was the same. The same massive selection in every genre you could think of. The same proto-hipsters who could give you a dozen recommendations on any album that you liked. The same strip-mall exteriors hiding a vibrant store on the inside.
I've known a bunch of people who ponder what would happen if Rasputin or Amoeba (two Bay Area-record stores) went national... and I tell them the same thing: Tower Records.
I never knew Russ, nor considered that he was a legendary boozer... but, the man died with an empty whiskey glass in his hand, and as the article points out; he liked the sauce. Maybe he was a Drunkard; maybe he was Drunkard-adjacent. Tonight, I'm going to dedicate a tipple the man that gave me a place to hang out as a teenager, and introduced me to a love of all forms of music.

Re: An Aging Hippy; An Icon; A Local Legend
There's someone like that in my neck of the woods. Dr. Records survived the mp3 crapfest and actually became hip again. Everything you'd enter his place it smelled like sandalwood and pot. Lots of old unknowns in those bins. He relocated for years ago, and now there's a local brewery and taproom located there in Orono. Seems fitting. Calls for a drink.Rooster wrote: ↑Mon Mar 05, 2018 8:48 pmhttp://www.sacbee.com/entertainment/mus ... 42104.html
