However, it should be mentioned that certain songs (or musical genres) go well with certain drinks:
For a good old fashioned drunken blowout The Pogues, The Dubliners or The Chieftans (amongst others) provide a fine arm raising rhythm.
For sudden drinking frenzies The Wonderstuff, Blink 182 or Blur (amongst others) impart a certain esprit de corps.
For a reflective "fuck'em all" session the inestimable Mr Waits, Hank Williams (pere et fils) or even Bob Dylan (amongst others) cannot be beaten.
And for all purpose boozing a combination of Oasis, The Fall and The Beautiful South (again, amongst others) rate as personal favourites.
But on the whole, isn't conversation the cornerstone of tying one on?

please tell me you did intend to say hank williams, as opposed to hank williams 2 or 3. hank williams the original is a great listen whenhaving a good reflective drunk, but i don't think anyone knows who he is anymore.
Scroll up darlin', I am quite familiar with Hank. Most people are, just don't realize the tunes originate from him. Great songwriter and performer. I live 2.5 miles from his birthplace.
sorry, didn't even read this page, i was just kinda spot checkin' old posts. don't i feel like a jackass.

That song always reminds me of the MDC tour bus from when they moved me here.

I also think of Big River which they covered on the B side of the Shades of Grey 7". Dave was trying to talk me into not moving to Minneapolis and instead finishing the tour out with them (through New Orleans, etc.) so I'd just return to the Bay Area, so he dedicated that song to me every night. Now if he would have only changed the words the Big Liver, I would have maybe contemplated it.

Johnny Cash Big River

Now I taught the weeping willow how to cry,
And I showed the clouds how to cover up a clear blue sky.
And the tears that I cried for that woman are gonna flood you Big River.
Then I'm gonna sit right here until I die.

I met her accidentally in St. Paul (Minnesota).
And it tore me up every time I heard her drawl, Southern drawl.
Then I heard my dream was back Downstream cavortin' in Davenport,
And I followed you, Big River, when you called.

Then you took me to St. Louis later on (down the river).
A freighter said she's been here but she's gone, boy, she's gone.
I found her trail in Memphis, but she just walked up the block.
She raised a few eyebrows and then she went on down alone.

Now, won't you batter down by Baton Rouge, River Queen, roll it on.
Take that woman on down to New Orleans, New Orleans.
Go on, I've had enough; dump my blues down in the gulf.
She loves you, Big River, more than me.

Now I taught the weeping willow how to cry, cry, cry
And I showed the clouds how to cover up a clear blue sky.
And the tears that I cried for that woman are gonna flood you Big River.
Then I'm gonna sit right here until I die.

Sea Song - Robert Wyatt

You look different every time you come
From the foam-crested brine
Your skin shining softly in the moonlight
Partly fish, partly porpoise, partly baby sperm whale
Am I yours? Are you mine to play with?
Joking apart - when you're drunk you're terrific when you're drunk
I like you mostly late at night you're quite alright
But I can't understand the different you in the morning
When it's time to play at being human for a while please smile!
You'll be different in the spring, I know
You're a seasonal beast like the starfish that drift in with the tide
So until your your blood runs to meet the next full moon
You're madness fits in nicely with my own
Your lunacy fits neatly with my own, my very own
We're not alone
"If I had all the money that I've spent on drink, I'd spend it on drink!"
"The trouble with internet quotes is that one can never be sure if they are genuine." - Abraham Lincoln
Kindly listen to this, please.

Good call on Lucinda Williams and Whiskeytown. I especially like WT's"Drank Like a River" off of "Faithless Street". I've not liked Ryan's solo material as much.

I gotta 2nd (or 3rd) Reverend Horton Heat, one of the greatest drinking minds of Rockabilly - and a kick-ass guitarist to boot.

Gin and tonic Blues, Loco Gringos Like a party, Beer, Martini Time, I'm gonna sue TJD, baby I'm drunk...the list goes on and on.

Whiskey Beer and Wine

The doctor says I'm livin'
On precious borrowed time,
WIth all the time I'm givin'
To liquor beer and wine.

The X-rays of my liver,
look like molded old swiess cheese,
My heart pumps blood and alcohol,
Through hardended arteries.

Every body knows me,
Down at the local bar,
I drink until I can't see,
And I wonder where you are.

I guess I let my health go,
Since you quit bein' mine,
But there was nothing to replace you,
Except liquor beer and wine.

Liquor, beer, and wine
Is the flashing sign I see
Ever single morning I get up
It's buzzing down at me

I look up to the heaven's
For a ray of hope to shine
And there it is in neon,
Liquor beer and wine

Ever since you've left me
I've lived out of my car
Parked between the liquor store
And Uncle Bubba's bar

Booze helps ease the heartache
But your constantly in mind
As constant as that buzzing noise
Of Uncle Bubba's sign

(Chorus)

Man, those are cool. I used to have quite a few goofy LPs like that, but had to sell alot of them when I moved last. I still find some good ones every once in a while, though.....
