Morgan 100 proof...

Post by Capt. Pantless »

I'm well aware of the board's disposition towards the Sailor over Morgan (and am fully on the side of Sailor) but as it is working in the liquor industry from time to time I get to try new beers, wines, and liquors before they're released to the general public. Morgan 100 proof was one of those liquors and in a word, awful.

I love rum and most of it I'm willing to drink, from Ron Rico to Mount Gay, as long as it tastes good I'll take it. But when I first caught a whiff that Morgan was coming out with a 100 proof my immediate reaction was both shock and awe. At first I thought that perhaps they'd been scared by the fact that Sailor Jerry's has been around for a much shorter time commercially and is slowly working it's way up in ranking of who sells the most (I believe it was 4th the last time I looked). Then I got disgusted because Morgan is in fact the top selling rum in the world and it was like they were trying to pull the rug out from decent rums. And finally, I was awed by the fact that Morgan would piss away so much money on more bad product.

At least where I live and work, any liquor that comes out with a 100 proof on top of whatever normal ABV liquor simply does not sell; off the top of my head Absolut 100 comes to mind. Granted, Morgan certainly has plenty of money to piss away but one would presume that they wouldn't want to do that. But anyways, onto the liquor itself. I tasted it first straight and then mixed with coke. Both times I was completely overwhelmed by a caramel taste that presumably was used so heavy-handidly in order to hid the fact that the booze is 100 proof, and considering that usual Morgan is only 70 proof they hope that their customers won't notice the increase in booze.
Overall though, the caramel taste was in fact so ridiculously over-powering that any other flavors were covered. I believe it was a mistake for this booze to even exist although I'm sure there will be a small niche market unfortunately. Avoid at all costs, unless free.

Captain Pantless; out of curiosity, what is your opinion of the dark bacardie (the Bacardi which is darker than the spiced... almost black in color)?

I enjoy the Bacardi Black, myself. I haven't seen it, though, in quite a few years.

been a while...i've only had the bacardi select maybe once or twice. but i love the really dark rums, i love tasting the molassas running down the throat. if i'm going to be drinking mai tais or daiquiris in the summer then bacardi is where i look, as we don't have decent rum other than the sailor where i work. but i do indeed love the select, although if i had to choose i'd take myer's dark over bacardi. but i'd take either over anything morgan throws at me.

also the funny thing, i'm friendly with the morgan rep and we had a discussion about this and i flat out told him sailor was a better rum and that morgan 100 wouldn't sell. and he AGREED. so what does that say...

Black Bacardi does indeed rule the seas; the first time I got it, me and a few fellow fiends drained a handle of it within in an hour.... however, for some reason, my mother has come to take it as her preferred pina coloda rum. As my friend Sean put it, the rum doesn't go down easy - it stays in ones throat for several moments, warming it. We both agreed it's not a summer drink.

That being stated, my friend bought me a bottle of Whaler's Dark Rum, and it was dark rum without the molasses effect - meaning, it had a definite flavor, which was very chocolate-esque, but it didn''t stick to ones throat like Bacardi. However, for $12 (without tax) it is still a good deal, and i recommend it.

BTW, Pantless, I've noticed the myers, but it always atleast 5$ more than the bacardi at the liquor store; do you think it's worth the difference in the moneys?

Myers is alright, and I drank a lot of it before I knew better--but Whaler's now one of my standbys. Good all around rum, and it works equally well as both a summer and winter rum.

I'm gonna try Sailor Jerry for the first time when I visit the States in November.

I don't drink much rum (never liked Morgan), but the way everyone here raves about the Sailor it's high time I had some.

Indeed. My local candy store has raised their prices signifigantly and it is now turnign toward winter (which means less rum and more brandy) but a bottle of the Sailor should never be too far from hand. I hope you enjoy your first experience.

p.s. Shit. I'm drunk. What a great night it's been.

I just tried the Morgan 100 and it was mixed with coke or something like that and it wasnt that bad. I normally cant tolerate rum, but i think this isnt a bad choice if you dont like "normal" rum...

Morgans dark rum is great,

Sailors i dont like cos spiced rum is too sweet and sickly for me.

White, golden, black rums of any nature i like.....bacardi black surely is nice stuff though.

Goslings black seal is one of my favs though, really nice stuff i thought.

I've recently developed a taste for neat Morgans Spiced, however, I just can't seem to be doing with with white or dark rum at the moment - they both make me sick. Unfortunately my local bargain booze does not stock Sailor Jerry. To be fair thoght, Morgans Spiced does a good enough job :-)

Morgans spiced is okay, but the fact of the matter is it's only 35 percent. Sailor Jerry is 46 percent if I remember correctly and somehow even fucking smoother. I bought 2 26ers of it when the LCBO first picked it up and went through them in a day. Morgans spiced is alright but to me it just doesn't even come close.
