Beer Mixology?

Post by Curb Feeler »

Normally I stick to good whiskey and cheap beer, but one of my locals has a "Beer Mixology" menu that features various beer "cocktails", for lack of a better word. There's your standard Black and Tan (Guinness and Harp/Bass ale) and Snakebite (Cider and Beer), but they also had some other odd creations like The Eclipse (Bareknuckle and Blue Moon).

All the ones I tried reminded me of the Band Rush in that the sum is less than the individual components. In other words, they sucked. That got me thinking. Are there any beer mixers worth drinking? I'm talking beer only, not beer and liquor.

cider and lager works, as you said. it seems you can mix any beer with guinness and get something workable. it's the beer with a taste for beer.

i think that's it, though. putting liquor in beer is not only tasty, but also efficent, but you nixed those.

I'm a big fan of the flaming Dr. Pepper. (151 and amaretto dropped into a glass of beer). It's a great way to figure out which of your friends is a candidate for natural selection. I love watching people set themselves ablaze.

I believe a cocktail made with beer is technically called a concoction.

Light beer with spicy V-8 juice

Cider and stout

Flaming Dr. Pepper (used to do these all the time till my bar ran outta 151).

And my personal favorite, prolly cuz I'm from Michigan. Founder's Cerise (cherry ale) with Founder's Breakfast stout (dark as Guinness, coffee and malt).
Bourbon is my blood.

strong cheap ass beer and an shot class of tomato juice. drink that daily, adds to the food value of the beer and mellows the cheap ass favour to a point I prefer it to the "top shelf" beers*.

otherwise the only approved way of mixing beer with anything else is internally.

* the best beer is the one you brew yourself, no corn sugar, pure malt, real hops. It can't be bought that I know of.

I'll drink to that!
A mate of mine just bought the last of my home-made stout from me. Well technically he bought the second to last, I gave the final bottle to my girlfriend. Is there a purer declaration of drunkard love than that? ;)

On topic, I'm a fan of Black & Tan down the pub. There's a couple of proper Irish pubs here that do it well.

I prefer to mix my beer with more beer. Yeah, that's a little simple but whatever, it works for me.

It has to be the right season, but about 2/3 parts Pumpkin Ale mixed with 1/3 part cider is quite tasty.

this one works in the winter when these sort of seasonals are present: Do a Rasberry Chocolatte. Find a rasberry flavored holiday ale (new belgium sells one called framoizen) or maybe a rasberry lambic, then float a very chocolattey stout over the top(young's double chocolatte stout is pretty widely available). It's like a delicious carbonated candybar... that gets you drunk

Irish car bombs still have to be one of my favorite run of the mill 'concoctions'. Also, this is a pretty sweet mix my old girlfriend/bartender (heh) used to whip up at home sometimes:

Guinness, 1 shot of vodka, 1 shot of Irish Cream, 1 tsp sugar, 2 cherries

If you don't do it just right, though, it will curdle.
