Sure do, I got two! Though somewhat bullshitty and impractical to drink from, they are good fun.kowalski wrote:Heh, I bet Negromancer has...

actually, can I claim any pointy vessel as a viking horn? Like that wine glass I broke the base off. I drank mead out of that

Most of the time mead was probably drunk out of glassware, ceramic or rather wooden cups or bowls - so you can knock yourself out as long as it's fancy, like the drink.Mr. Viking wrote:actually, can I claim any pointy vessel as a viking horn? Today the drinking horn is somewhat analogous to the tiki-mug in terms of authenticity, with a slight degree of exaggeration.
If you ever go to a ren. faire or historical festival or what have you, and you see somebody with a drinking horn in their belt, it makes just about as much sense as this:
...Not that there's anything wrong with that...

I usually drink it out of the irn bru bottles I make it in. I think that is authentic, as Viking raiders would have found it difficult to return plundered glassware, whether for a 30p refund or not

One must remember that then like today, it was all provided for - unless the host was a penny pinching, mouth breathing dry. And it's much more fun sharing a horn than everybody carrying their own.

Yes, I do.
The way to prep a horn so you don't taste the bull is to melt beeswax (or a mix of paraffin and beeswax) and pour it in the horn, swish it about, until you have a nice even coating. If the inside of the horn is really rough, then you may need to scrape it out before applying the lining.
Don't drink hot drinks in it, innit.
My new horn I got from a Kickstarter project called DAS HORN:
Kit fer 21st Century Vikins.
Looks like you can get them just about anywhere now, though.

Ah yes, the old "break top of glass off trick". No one can put his drink down until finished. Absolute must on a boring familily reunion etcWingman wrote:i like how you can't put 'em down 'til they're empty.

Mead can be fine. But it's nothing compared to a well executed braggot. That I would drink from a horn and never put down.

My friend RIPT says that as a braggart, he trumps your obscure mead variety, and what's more, that he will buy this entire forum and turn it into a rental property.Badfellow wrote:Mead can be fine. Although it might just be oettinger drunk dialing me again.
