Alcoholic Ginger Beer (I kid you not..)

Post by NightShiftCharlie »

On Friday I was cruising the beer aisle at my nearby supermarket, minding my own business, when I came across this; Crabbie's Alcoholic Ginger Beer. That was the first time I heard of this. It's from Scotland, apparently, and it's $11.50 for a 4pak, but I got it on sale for $10. The first thing that came to mind when I saw it was "I wonder what a Dark & Stormy would be like with this stuff." I also bought a couple of bottles of Reed's regular ginger beer for comparison (and also to see if it has what it takes to be my brand for regular Dark & Stormies. It does). Just finished a bottle of Reed's, now to check out a bottle of Crabbie's straight. The bottle says "best served chilled over ice with a slice of lime or lemon," but I've chilled mine sufficiently to drink it straight. Now for the taste: The booze (4.8%/volume, 11.2 oz bottle) seems to smooth out the taste of the ginger. I'm tasting the alcohol more in the after taste than when it first hits my tongue, but maybe it's just me. Definitely drinkable. This could definitely be Dark & Stormy material (more on that later), But I figure it could also be a worthy substitute for regular ginger beer in shandies (A Sissy-Free Shandy?), Moscow Mules (Glasgow Mule?) or others.

Near the end of the first bottle, and the buzz is already kicking in!

Traditionally ginger beer was alcoholic, because that was the only way to make things fizzy before Joseph Priestly worked out how to gather carbon dioxide off the top of brewing vats and add it to water to make it fizzy. I haven't bought crabbies because I keep worrying it's a repackaged alcopop. It's also quite expensive. I'll probably try it at some point to see if it's any good

I tried Crabbie's once at a party. All the girls were drinking it. In fairness, it's not that bad. Would still have my lager over it, but it's pleasant enough.

I have mentioned alcoholic ginger beer a few times and even posted a few recipes for home-brewing the stuff (with which Mr. Viking has been experimenting). Do try one of the recipes for yourself, it's cheap, easy and produces good results.

well I've decanted some of my ginger beer. Not enough ginger in it, and didn't add enough sugar. I'll know better for next time. Has an earthy taste because it sat on the yeast too long. Still fairly drinkable, especially with some sugar added for sweetness and gin because why not

Try adding vodka, too.

don't have no vodka. Was going to buy a bottle the other day, but I decided against, remembering how much gin and scotch I have sitting about

Gin will work, too.

I have one at home which I believe is called Cock & Bull. Tried it while camping in a Moscow Mule. Very tasty.
