Summer drink time.

Post by Patchez »

I was looking through the latest issue of Wine Enthusiast , the wife got to pick 4 magazines for a dollar for two years so don't judge. Turns out that there are some decent articles in there. Aside from making me enjoy wine more and now that our Frenchman isn't around as much, it helps me make some less than shitty picks.

They have broadened the scope of the 'zine to include spirits and craft beer. Now you're fucking talking. They also have cocktail articles, mostly involving wine or the spirit of the month.

This month was Old Tom Gins and the revival of them. The cocktail the made was a Seasonal75, a take on the classic French 75. For those not familiar with the original I have the original recipe from Borhmann's Bartender's guide.

Classic French 75.

Aromatic champagne Cocktail for aperitif or after dinner drink

-Champagne glass or flute
-Shaker

3/4 oz Gin
3/4 oz Cointreau or orange flavored liqueur
3/4 oz lemon juice
1 dash Pernod
Champagne or sparkling wine for topping up.

-Garnish with half a slice of orange and a maraschino cherry

Shake all ingredients, accept champagne, in shaker with ice. Strain into flute and top up with champagne. Spear orange and cherry on a toothpick and perch on the side of the glass.

Now the seasonal comes from a New Orleans joint called Sac-a-lait. It uses whatever fruit is in season at the time, could be watermelon or blueberries. Strawberries or peaches. You'll just have to make a syrup out of the fruit. As in this example with blueberries.

Blueberry Syrup.

1 cup fresh blueberries
1 cup sugar
Place the ingredients in a pot with 1/2 cup of water and cook on a medium to slow heat stirring till sugar disolves. Reduce heat to low and simmer till syrupy about 15 minutes. Cool, purree and strain. If the mixture is too thick thin with simple syrup.

2 oz gin
3/4 oz blueberry syrup
3/4 lemon juice
3 dashes of Peychaud's bitters
Cava(Spannish Wine) to top.

Lemon twist for Garnish

Shake all accept for Cava over ice and strain into flute.
Top off with Cava and garnish with lemon twist.
Now you're ready for some anti-dry-otics!-BeerMakesMeSmarter

Champagne cocktail sounds interesting. I’ve tried adding brandy and strawberry juice at Xmas, now maybe I’ll give gin and lemon juice a go. I’d skip the Pernod though. Just another of those old European tonics that everyone mixes with nicer things to hide the taste because they’re undrinkable on their own.

Indeed. Campari, Pimms and Jagermeister spring to mind.

Normally cucumbers aren't my favorite thing but I wouldn't turn down some form of cucumber cocktail in the summer. They always look refreshing.

Ice cold vodka, with chaser of choosing. At least that's what I've been doing for last 3 days.

Boozy strawberries for a hot summer day. Maybe someday I will make it...

Image

Strawberry Daiquiri Bites (this is the gist but you can find it via Food Network)
6 hrs 15 mins · Yield: 15 to 20 strawberries

INGREDIENTS
1 1/4 cups light rum
1/4 cup lime juice
1 quart medium strawberries, with stems
1 cup granulated sugar

Directions. Put the strawberries in a mason jar with the rum put in the fridge for 15 minutes. Then, in a small bowl, combine the sugar and lime zest with the rum and soak for 6 hours in the fridge. Remove the strawberries from the jar and roll them around in the sugar. Use leftover juice to make some rum drinks!

There is a special fund laid out in advance specifying that if I say this sentence out loud I will be sniped on the spot.

I didn't pay for it, the wife did. I started reading it because if Boozi ever gets back on the boards I won't sound completely ignorant when discussing wine.
