Hmm. I'm trying to understand why you have to fish for ice. I just push the lever, and it falls out of the freezer into my glass. Sometimes the machine even poops a stray cube or two on the floor when no one is even in the room .

Drinking and Ice Fishing In NH, 2012

Post by Mongeaux »

Last summer the NH Union Leader ran a fish pic contest and I entered a shot from the 2011 Lake Winnipesaukee Ice Fishing derby. The winner was going to get his pic in the 2012 digest, or something, Moments after I uploaded my pic I promptly forgot the whole thing. There were hundreds of entries.

So a few weeks ago I gathered my gear and drove it all north for this year's Ice fishing derby. My buddies throw a huge shindig out on the ice every year - our host owns a chalet on the water in Moultonborough

- and since I had to go in to work a few hours we didn't get there til 8 friday night, just in time for shrimp cocktail and jaeger shots. We dumped our gear in the bunkhouse and went around front to the fire ring and as I walked up to the group they said "Hey! there's the guy who made us famous!"

"Huh?" I replied.

After forcing the obligatory liquor down my throat they said "Haven't you seen the new rulebook? Have you been to the NH Fish and Game website lately?"

"(cough) Nope..."

"Well, one of your pics is all over it! We've even heard it's in the Conway Mt Washington Valley Book!"

"The WHAT?"

"The 2011 Digest!"

Things sort of blurred together after that. I do recall bombing around the ice at midnight in a souped-up golf cart painted in patriots colors with police flashers and a siren. There was wild turkey 101 too.

So the weekend proceeded apace. The next morning we set out traps. And we made a few supply runs.

The 20-somethings in the group amused themselves.

We set up a house and a kitchen on the ice.

They were sliding a bottle around too. It was rather odd.

Us old farts worked the traps

Took a few rainbows, Saturday

And sunday as I drove home the guys still on the ice called me on my cell. They told me to stop by the Board in Meredith because the radio'd just said I won $100 in a drawing. Sure enough, the check was waiting,

As for the F&G pics...I didn't win the Union leader contest on votes but they used my 2011 shot anyway:

Heh. Good weekend. I was almost back to normal by the following Thursday.

I liked where this was going until you posted pics without the chicks. then it's just a bunch of dudes freezing their beanbags off together on the tundra of Lambeau Field.

love the transformation form sad face waiting for fish to happy face when you've caught one. Hoping to go fishing properly for the first time with some friends this summer. Maybe I'll be able to beat my best catch of a fish the size of my pinky

I'm sure you'll have fun, you just gotta get out there. Can't catch em in your living room, and the buzz is just as good, if not better!

i got this shot last June about 30 miles offshore in the Gulf Of Maine:

Image

We brought a case of Grolsch and took 65 pounds of codfish filets back with us. Ten bucks a pound....woo!

We call them "Freshwater Cusk" in New Hampshire. That one got diced up for chowder. They are very good eating. Only issue is when you grab them to take out the hook they sweat a pinkish slime not unlike Elmer's Glue.

Yes. This.

Makes me sorry the ice is disappearing here, not that I've ever done it up as right as you.
