I make a more modern version.

I take a slice of orange and muddle it with the the sugar and bitters. I muddle the shit out of it.

Then I add bourbon until I can't feel feelings anymore, and if you don't know how to measure that when mixing drinks, then you should stop mixinbg em.

Old fashioneds always remind me of the airplane scene with Jim baccus in "It's a Mad Mad Mad world."

I highly suggest you obtain a bottle of Peychaud's Bitters for such applications.

i am inadvertantly a little too heavy handed with the bitters to notice subtle differences in the brands.....

guess more practice is the only answer....

How can you not tell the dif between Peychaud's & Angostura?

They're as different as Halle Berry & Eva Mendez!
Current favorite drinks: BOOKERS!! Bombay Sapphire, Makers Mark, Trader Joe's Germanic beers

halle berry's a douchebag.

i just had to get that out.
i use angostura because simply finding a place in this town that sells bitters at all is like pulling teeth while katie couric is tied to your wrists. god forbid there be a selection.

One of our members recommended the use of rye whiskey with the Old Fashioned because it is not as sweet as bourbon. You can find his recipe here: http://www.refinedvices.com/forum_/view ... highlight=

I love bourbon, but it's true most of the bourbon cocktails, especially the Manhattan and the Old Fashioned, do better with rye than bourbon.
