Oban Single Malt

Post by WorkingFlaskHero »

Got a bottle as a belated xmas gift. As a Scotch drinker, I cut my teeth on JWB. When I cracked this open I truly got an "education" if you will into what Scotch should taste like. Anyone else drink this regularly?

Can't say I've even seen it offered locally so no comment... I'm a sherry cask kind of guy so what litte research I just did says that it wouldn't be my bag... though I don't doubt ya on the fantasticalness of it.

I guess I've been kinda "sheltered" when it comes to Scotch. Giving me a bottle of good hooch is like giving a monkey a fire extinguisher. Damned if he know's what it's for, but he'll have fun finding out.

I've been really hot on Balenvie Doublewood lately, give that a wag.

My nose is for shit but I tossed that stuff down and felt the awesome blending with my soul. Compare the two and you'll have a pretty good read on the Oban. Don't get me wrong, some lush on here has probably taken it for a test run.

And it goes without saying that we all have our own tastes so what I love may not work for you.

A friend of mine swears by Balenvie. He says the fact that they split maturing it into two different kinds of casks makes a huge difference. This observation is lost on me as I guess my pallate is very pedestrian to such things. He broke it out after a late night poker game and I remember how he went on and on about it. I appreciated it at the time but nothing really "stood out" as far as I'm concerned.

I doubt the split makes all that much difference to non-snobs like you or I as the straight sherry casks like Glenmorangie 12yo are comparable (though not quite as good to my tongue). Personally, I just think Balenvie makes a good scotch that goes good all night and doesn't ask for cab fare in the morning.

I concur. My Local has a number of good single malts/blends on hand. Laphroaig, Dalmore and MacCallan are the one's I've been eyeballing. I shall partake of them all and then draw my own conclusions.

My personal favorite of them all, as long as you don't mind pulling peat out from between your teeth.
Drink your fucking drink, how about that? Stop the fuckin' presses, isn't it genius??

Oban's good stuff, for sure, as is the Balvenie. Personally I favor Lagavulin or Talisker, but it's really a matter of personal taste. To quote Robert Louis Stevenson: "The king o' drinks, as I conceive it, Talisker, Islay or Glenlivet..."

Deep into my cups of Oban now...... I think i've found my "Graceland". Tried Laphroaig for the first time last night and also found it very agreeable. Didn't get any peat in my teeth, but the finish is fantastic. Will put Laganvulie(sp) and Dalmore on deck for next time.

Is Lagavulin smokey? If so, I found it repulsive.

Also, you should try Balvanie 21yo Portwood Single Barrel Scotch. It's pricey, but well worth it.

Yes, it's smokey as hell, but great stuff once you develop a taste for it. King of the Islays in my book.

You are right on both counts about Portwood: tasty and pricey

Give Craggenmore a try -- high quality stuff and you can get 4 fifths for the price of a Balvenie Portwood

Oban 14 is great. If you like it, give Caol Isla or Bunnahabhain a shot as well.

About the Lagavulin, we may have rec'd a skunky bottle. We have a friend who (God rest his soul) swears up and down about it. It's his favorite Scotch. Skunky bottle or not, I wouldn't want to drop money on it to find out.

I will have to try Craggenmore though.

I will do just that. Are those brands "spendy" as well? I'm afraid I openned a big can of expensive worms.
