Seagram's Distiller's Reserve Gin

Post by ivan »

Picked some up this morning, as it was on sale.

Wow.

This is a nice, smooth gin, not too heavy on the botanicals. With a few dashes of Angostura bitters, it makes a quite refreshing G&T. Very light on the palate, very drinkable. And very dangerous.

Dangerous? Yes. Because it comes in at 102 proof- right between Wild Turkey and Fighting Cock. At least with those two fine Bourbons, you can taste the impending buzz. They tell you up front that you are doomed, and will soon be hanging on to the carpet. This Gin is different. It's subtle, it's unassuming, it's stealthy. It's Verbal Kent turning into Kaiser Soze. It's a chloroform rag from behind.

I can do nothing but give this my highest recommendation. If you see it, and you're at all a Gin fan, buy it. Especially at $10 for a 750 mL.

I bought this expressly because of your recommendation despite a long-held prejudice against Seagram's gin, and I was very impressed; it's the the proverbial iron fist in a velvet glove, and it lacks the vile piney quality of Gilbey's or Gordon's, my usual budget-conscious gin favorites. I recommend it highly.

i have seen it but was wary of the proof and my heavy handed martinis..

i have to admit i like regular seagrams for an inexpensive gin..it is light and refreshing and makes a drinkable martini..

i may buy a small bottle to try but maybe mix it with grapefruit juice instead..(of course calcium fortified-for health of course)

i wonder what type of hangover potential would be with this gin?

Seagrams's has a nice lemony back to it. It's affordable and tastes so good I'll polish off a handle in a few days at the expense of a hangover. Same with Burnett's.

Of course! To your health!

I don't know, but if Big Liquor is making better Gin, and it passes your muster, I'll be first in line.

yes it does have that refreshing lemon back to it..very clean for an inexpensive gin..

burnetts is a bit too sweet..a few years ago i went to my local liquor store and the regular clerk recommended burnetts to me. i said is it sweet? he said not to me..i said 'well, i'll try it' and he said if you don't like it return it and i'll give you full credit..

(WHOA!) needless to say it was sweet.. even straight up w/o verm and lemon twist.. returned it the next evening and got my $17 credit and bought my usual saph.. now that is good business..

i don't like milk anymore and rarely drink it straight..but love all other dairy or milk in recipes.. calcium fortified oj and grapefruit juice is the way to go..and LOTS of pulp in the OJ..mmmmmm chunky goodness..

i would always recommend any new discoveries cloud8.. you know new amsterdam is the first great 'big gin' from cali.. some wine company..(gallo?? mondavi?) don't recall just now.. if that is the wave to come then we are set for good drinking at a reasonable price..

i like the total gin experience and it does not equate to alcohol percentage.. the ritual and taste and experience is what is grand about gin..

just like a good scotch..

I can't wait to get back to the US and try some.... ugh. We have very little gin to choose from.
