Sure, the name can be lewdly interpreted*. But the fact stands that Mount Gay is the oldest continually operating distillery in the world. Anno 1703 to be exact motherfvckers. It is rum and it is dark, and it is fairly affordable for something held in a barrel close to 8 years, easy to drink neat. I plead the fifth, the whole fifth and nothing but.
Caramel and liquor have a bright and hungover future together. This I-went-swimmin-in-the-Caribbean rum is goonie good enough for me, but I believe that the dawn of a new day lies in an American single-malt whiskey from a copper pot still. It's recipe time for a summer melon eau de vie with 10 herbs and the Rev. Badfellow's secret, snake-bitten spices.
May whatever absolute or deity you prescribe to bless your drink, your family, and your way to the tavern with the road thereto finding your troubles resolved.

This here rummy is most certainly glad that you had the brass highballs to speak the name of this here rum.Badfellow wrote:Sure, the name can be lewdly interpreted*. It is indeed, in spite of its easily misnomered name, very fucking good.

There is a Fort Gay in West Virginny.
And hilarity hath already ensued.
Also, it is along the Tug Fork River.

Re: Mount Gay
Drinking a dark rum like a single malt or fine bourbon? Gotta confess that interests me. I've always figured that was a booze best enjoyed with layers of tropical juices, and as hard as I've tried to do Sailor Jerry straight up...
Wait. That just sounds queer to me.

Re: Mount Gay
Good dark rum should ALWAYS be consumed neat, or at the most with a single cube of ice floating in the sea. Save the tropical juices and orgeat syrup for the light rums that beg being cut with some acidity and sweetness. Something such as Wray & Nephew Overproof White is perfect for the task. I've even used Cruzan with good results. The Zombie, the Daiquiri and the Mai Tai Cocktail are classics in this arena.Smatter Noguts wrote:Drinking a dark rum like a single malt or fine bourbon? Y'all want some more delicious dark rum innuendo fun?
Check out Pusser's, official rum of the British Royal Navy. The "daily tot" is an interesting story in and of itself. More recently released is a higher proof cut of the same jib they call "Nelson's Blood".
(After his demise at sea during the Battle of Trafalger in 1805, the body of the commanding British admiral Lord Horatio Nelson was reportedly stored in a cask of standard navy rum for preservation until his interment could be performed. However, on the return voyage to England, several sailors are said to have broken into the stores and unknowingly drank rum from the cask, proclaiming it to be some of the finest shit they'd ever had. So the story goes.)

I have yet to sample the Mount Gay stable of rums but it's on the "to drink" list.

Ahhhhh, good old Screech. Love the stuff, but it's difficult to get in the Midwest. It's a dark rum, and as I vaguely recall very strong and abundant in character.Patchez wrote:Badfellow have you ever tried Newfoundland Screech? I was in Halifax a few years back. We spent most of the night in a maritime themed place down near the waterfront. When the bartender found out I was an American uninitiated in the ways of Newfoundland rum, I was promptly "Screeched" by the gentleman, an apparently traditional ceremony that involved throwing back a shot, reciting a dirty limerick (is there really any other kind?) and then kissing a large, ugly codfish mounted on the wall, off-handedly sort of hoping the thing didn't have the herps.
It would definately be nice to find a case or two to put away. Maybe I'll call up to Downtown Canada and see if they ship.
