Even though the Steelers and Skins suck, and the Bucs will prevail (hey, it happened that one time,) no rational being can support a boycott of WaHo.

I could point out the place the WaHo has in Americana, particularly in Southern culture--and I say that as a born and bred Canadian who has truly embraced the beauty and wonder of the South. I could point out the singular magic of all 24/7 dives. I don't even need to mention the patty melts, the egg sandwiches Grizzard revered (triple bonus points if you get that,) or good Gawd the hashbrowns.

Years ago, in the college-town Mecca of Athens, I sat down for a meal at the Five Points WaHo, with several good friends. The parking lot abutted on another, with a pretty decent drop b/t them--maybe 3-4 feet. Some of us had had a few drinks, but none of us were near my preferred state of inebriation. However, the guys one table over were quite toasted. And halfway through, 2 of them walked out. One came back in, and recounted this: "

"Man....we were walking...and it was like.....walk, walk, walk, Grand Canyon."

I've eaten at WaHo in every state of the cup, from stone cold, buzzed, wasted, to sneaking in a flask to mix with my OJ. For late night drunkard dining spots, it sits at the top of sit-downs, with IHOP, Denny's if you've got it, or local dives. I just want to meet Bert...I have a few questions for him.

Yeah, this was around 3 years ago now. I was drunk and I never actually wore them as sneakers, more like clogs or something.

Obviously, as a home-grown southerner, I grew up around Waffle House. I started the boycott saying I would never go to another WH. Then it was I'll never go to THAT WH again. Then eventually I went back. I can't resist the waffles!

Now that I'm on the left coast, there aren't any here. Which sucks, but I've still got the Hop and Denny's.

Yeah, I like to bump threads to fuck with the noobs. :)
RIP Tim.

I don't know Grizzard, but I know his boyhood friend and idol, Weyman C. Wannamaker, Jr., A Great American.

And to all the Chuck-haters out there, well...

I cant really get behind this boycott.
I just ate at the Waffle House the first time 2 weeks ago with the family.

Thats the only place they want to go when we are down south anymore.
it's all chaff, a striving after the wind.

Lewis is definitely an under-appreciated national, and certainly Southern, treasure. Once decribed as Andy Rooney with a Georgia accent, and a sense of humor, his writing was at the same time hilarious, insightful and refreshingly sharp. I admit I may be biased, we share a love of the South, Georgia, and the Bulldawgs, as well as the same heart condition (than ultimately killed him). His premature loss should well be mourned.

I need to leaf through my copies of his works, so I can post his wise musings on the proper ratio between vodka and orange juice.

Best Grizzard quote was about a group of stock car drivers coming to the White House in '78. (Not NASCAR- this is before it was a brand)

The drivers were there, Jimmy Carter was President, Willie Nelson was the entertainment.

LG claims a buddy leaned over and whispered "If my Granddaddy saw this, he'd have thought we won."

That's brilliance.

The South did win. It took a bit, but Jerry F.'s Moral Majority led to the South's complete control of the electorate, the Constitution and eventual control of the majority of State Houses, governorships as well as all three branches of the federal government.

I like Waffle House, its good. Hey, they're giving the guy whose walking a mile for every soldier killed in Iraq free food. He was just in Louisville.

I loved If I Ever Get Back to Georgia, I'm Gonna Nail My Feet to the Ground. No idea what happened to my copy, probably gave it away in a moment of drunken generosity.
