Last weekend I attended the annual "Anything That Floats But A Boat" race at the Shinnecock Fishing Station in Shinnecock Bay, Long Island.
The rules are simple. 1) You must build a boat using anything except boat parts or anything related to boating. 2) You must be prepared to drink heavily and have a great time.
The race is in the canal and the fastest time around the course wins. My good friend Captain Mot won the race this year racing his sleek spackel bucket kayak.
I documented the event with my new digital camera, which thankfully didn't get destroyed during the ensuing party. I began drinking at 9 am and had a twelve pack in me by the time the race began at 2 pm, so it's amazing any of these pictures came out.
Here is the funniest boat of all. I call it The Dude in the Big Water Tricycle.

Here is Sheryl, one of the Shinnecock Bartenders, in her Lobster Boat.

Here are two Hoser's on a raft. While people crossed the finish line, some onlookers on the sidelines attempted to pelt them with water balloons using a giant sling shot. Unfortunately, I was too mesmerized by the giant sling shot to get a picture of that but you can see the others guys with a hose drenching from a dock.

Here is Johnny Be Good crossing the finish line in his twig raft. He got disqualified because he used a real boat paddle to propel himself.

And here is my man, Captain Mot, victoriously crossing the finish line in his spackel bucket kayak.

And, of course, no race would be complete without an after party that continued on until the wee hours of the morning, reggae DJ and all.
