Back in the day, there was this corner bar in a more progressive part of the city called the Velvet Dog (been closed awhile now). To me, it had all the components of a cozy local bar with no underlying threat of violence nor pee on the floor. It was dimly lit, chill atmosphere with a lava lamp type ambiance behind the bar. More importantly, it featured an impressive menu of local craft beers and artisan cocktails, complete with a beer garden out back that had a bocce ball court. Nothing fancy, but definitely had charisma.

I would definitely call a bar with a beer garden and bocce ball court out back fancy pants. Sounds like a fun place though.Artful Drunktective wrote: ↑Thu Aug 08, 2019 10:58 amBack in the day, there was this corner bar in a more progressive part of the city called the Velvet Dog (been closed awhile now). This is what "RED" in Vegas should have looked like. They also served the shittiest rum and coke of my life. Thanks again, Dear Booze!
Don't worry. We're in no hurry.

The bocce court was not much more than a gravel pit and the "garden" was a concrete slab so not too fancy I guess. Still a good haunt though.scream ale wrote: ↑Thu Aug 08, 2019 4:26 pm

Hahaha yep. Down there in the cellar out of sight to not ruin the beer garden ambiance.scream ale wrote: ↑Sun Aug 11, 2019 1:33 pmThe children are actually kept in that small building just beyond the stools.

I agree. That WAS the shittiest Rum and coke. Ever.
It wasn't my idea to go there. We were killing time until the Griffin opened. It did suck. Bad.
Also, I'm not the one who flushed their sweaty underpants down the toilet.

^ ^ ^ Actually Dear Booze showed us an excellent mix of hole in the walls and extremely legendary places in Vegas. It was the best and most diverse bar hopping ever. He just needed to have his chops busted on this one weird place where for the record...nobody flushed any undies down the toilet. They were thrown in the rubbish bin.

Teller's in Lawrence, KS, the home of K.U.
It was a restaurant and bar in a historic bank (hence the name). Evidently it was the first bank robbed by Clyde Barrow (Bonnie & Clyde) in 1932. It was also cool that they kept some amazing features from the original bank. The bar still had the teller windows, and to get to the restrooms, you walked through the old bank vault. Lots of unique beers on tap and artisanal cocktails of course.
My first time there I had the "Tellers Mushrooms" which were stuffed with sausage (or tofu for the plant eaters) and gruyere fondue on top of grilled baguette with chili oil. Phenomenal. It's been closed for a while now but I heard this week it will reopen as a gastropub. Hopefully they keep the old skool aesthetics at this unique place.
