Hahaha. Riiiiiiight. Like what, Rockin' Taco? Ugh. My friends and I used to go there all the time. It was okay sometimes, but it was loud and crowded and trendy and blech. Of course, that one place - The Continental, I think? - I've only been there once, but it was nice and dark and quiet. Not really a dive, though. You want a dive, visit O'Hara's right off the Orange circle, or Paul's. O's tends to get a bit crowded with the Chapman students, but it's still great. And at Paul's they don't bother with the glasses, they just give you the whole can of beer.

I agree, Rockin Taco has its faults. not least are those you mention. But, you are obviouly familiar with the Fullerton area; is Fullerton to be judged by the Rockin Taco send up in the LA Times? Shirley you will admit to the pleasures of our Down-town. The multitude and proximity of restaurant cum bars, the festive evening atmosphere, the bar hopping possibilities. There may be SoCal locations with better restaurants and better bars, but none with as many fine bars within walking/stumbling distance of one another.

As to the Continental. I've been there once. After a day of hard work and drinking while brewing with my brew partner we decided to walk Downtown. We had been drinking that day and we were in no shape to drive. We first went to Hero's thinking we whould grab a bite and a beer. We were refused service due to our exisiting level of inebriation. Oh sure, they would feed us; but without a beer? We left without food or drink. We found our way to The Continental.

The Continental was more than willing to serve us; but first we would have to smoke or extinguish our cigars. We smoked. We walked through the bar to the back alley were we stood puffing for about 15 minutes. As we entered the bar I detoured to wash my hands. My friend proceded to the bar. When I returned to the bar I walked its length looking for friend. Not finding friend I put myself on the last stool at the end of the bar and ordered a Martini. The bartender gave me a very strange look he asked if I was OK. I replied yes and thanked him for the drink served. I sat and drank for about twenty minutes two martinis, wondering were my friend had been off too and when he might return. The bartender never let on that my friend was down at the other end of the bar waiting for me, with another martini with my name on it! I don't know how my friend found me or why. I suppose he got tired of waiting for me and decided to leave. He found me as he was walking out of the bar to see if i was outside.

The Continental has good Martinis but they aren't very good with keeping there customers intouch with one another.

Too lazy to read the whole thread.sorry...but has anyone suggested Minneapolis? It is right smack dab in the middle of the whole friggin country.(and Im not just saying that because I live here) :)

I like Minneanopolis cause of the pretty fast cars. But the US has a problem - draconian drinking laws. Over 21! Not that it affects me. I will have to skip this for one year. Until I graduate and have cassshhh.

Australia? Not the capitals.

Sydney - well, it may be good if you are recruiting for hosts on Queer Eye for the Straight Guy....too many "metrosexual" guys who aren't macho - pearl wristbands and everything ends with latte. Out of the rocks, I don't care for it.

Melbourne. Cold and miserable. It's greatest claim to fame is that it is "liveable".

Canberra - tax sink of the nation, provincial capital and most Australians avoid it like the plague. Besides, it's best bar burnt down. http://www.mooseheads.com.au

Adelaide - the "city of churches" - that says it all. But SA does make good reds

Darwin - renowned for sinking piss, but full of ex cons, mercanaries and missionaries.

Perth - full of smart rednecks. Good lifestyle. Pity nine out of ten Australians will never see one third of the continent, WA.

Brisbane/Gold Coast. Full of less intelligent rednecks. Too many tourists. Maybe the nicest place.

Tasmania/Hobart - lets just say the local pub doesn't have a family discount, they would lose too much revenue. Mnay who move to the mainland have a hideous scar on either shoulder and count down from thirteen on their fingers.

The best bet is Townsville, Cairns or Byron Bay. Coastal Towns, one has a casino the powerpuff girls live there, all have good weather and Byron is full of stoners and has a nice beach.

Globally, I think that HK or the Caymans....

i havent been many places ouside the UK( houston, TX twice; and spain once) i dont mind where this thing is, as lomg as it is as centrasl as possible for everybody.i expect it will be somewhere in the US because of sheer numbers.is Vegas expensive for drinkiong a lot?we need somewhere we will all be accomodated and not too expensive,as a LOT of drinks will be consumed.what does the Management think? any ideas, Giles & co.?

i will do my utmost to get to wherever the final location turns out to be. as long as enough notice is given.

as for time of year, i dont have really ant preference,but i realize that a lot of people may have trouble with hot places;so that will ahve to be taken into consideration whn thinking of both location and time of year.

thats my tuppence worth. hope to see you all wherever and whenever

Hawaii is still US, but it's equally inconvenient for most!
